hey guys! i have a friend that showed me how to increase your internet speed. this will only be applicable to Windows XP though.

lot of windos users may find after installing Windows XP, Thier connection in internet gets a bit slower. Possible reason for this is the QoS (Quality of Service) . The service reserves 20 per cent for the bandwidth , even the QoS is disabled. this is for broad band connections. I try also this in dial up connection and it is working also.

1.Please make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on with any account that just has administrator privileges.
2. start - run - type gpedit.msc
3. expand the "local computer policy" branch
4. expand the "administrative templates" branch
5. expand the "network branch"
6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window
7. in right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting
8. on setting tab check the "enabled" item
9. where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0 After doing this, you should immediately notice a boost in your Internet connection speed.

some need re-boot. I have one machine that needs to reboot first, the others didn't. Don't know why this is.

This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, XP seems to want to reserve 20% of the bandwidth for its self. Even with QoS disabled, even when this item is disabled. So why not use it to your advantage. To demonstrate the problem with this on stand alone machines start up a big download from a server with an FTP client. Try to find a server that doesn't max out your bandwidth. In this case you want a slow to medium speed server to demonstrate this. Let it run for a couple of minutes to get stable. The start up another download from the same server with another instance of your FTP client. You will notice that the available bandwidth is now being fought over and one of the clients download will be very slow or both will slow down when they should both be using the available bandwidth. Using this "tweak" both clients will have a fair share of the bandwidth and will not fight over the bandwidth.

Do not bother if you have Windows XP Home Edition, you are not allowed to use the Group Policy Editor as it is only available for Windows XP Professional Edition. There are ways to get it on to your Home Edition but I would not recommend doing so unless you know what you are touching and doing.

I'm on vacation right now, so there's no point in me doing it. I'll try when I get home tho.

Thanks Josh, I did this, and my Internet connection on my computer is faster. That was totally easy, so nobody should be afraid to do it.

Now that your Internet connection is faster, you can receive better coverage on your Wi-Fi!

Yes, I am glad you put this on here, because it seems to work!

I'm gonna join a game of Worm War on WC3 and see if my connection is faster than everybody elses'. I'll give you the results.

Results: I came in second in the loading screen, runner-up to the host. Not bad. I have a cable connection in case you are wondering.

Make sure you have good hosts though, on Wc3 most of the lag you get usually comes from the host, unless you have like 56k.
