View Full Version : Hills in Starcraft 2?

I noticed recently that all the starcraft II footage I've seen shows interesting terrain, but it seems to be all cliffs and plains, no WC3 style hills. I think this is weird and I hope they change it in the release, because it looks really cartoony and unnatural. At the very least, they should include tools in the editor to raise and lower terrain..

Well tbh most lava-oriented footage has shown slopes and hills. In the Artwork trailer, for example, where theres a ****bunch of Zerglings attacking a Protoss position, you can also see slopes. I think the gameplay trailer got some slopes too, in the "****bunch of 'lings" scene, but it's could be hard to see due to the camera angle.

you wouldn't have hills on a space station though. maybe on terrain.

Not hills. Ramps. Those were in the original, too.

well in the artwork trailer there is also a scene were a number of protoss units are approaching a high terran position, clearly most of the terrain types are not shown, hopefully we'll get more insights with latter videos

I don't know what you're talking about: my space station would totally have hills.

If u hve a space station on the moon u can build them on higher levels than on earth^^
In SC1 there are cliffs can ramps that allow access to the cliff.
Whereas hills I'm not to sure if it's a good addition to the game, sure it makes it more realistic but would it means for gameplay? can you build on it? can ground units travel on it freely?
Nevertheless I remember seeing these smaller hills in SC1 on Aiur and we can't build on them nor can units can on it, it is very annoying.
And I don't think there'll be any hills after seeing the videos.

yea i dont want to deal with picky building placement like C&C 3. god placing buildings was a huge headache cause its soooo picky whether it was a tiny blip on the terrain or the buildings were too close together.

of coruse they can. look at WCIII. it makes your base much more interesting to have it in a more 3d conventional way

I wonder how hills will affect gameplay? Will my higher ground give me +5 dexterity?

where's your head at?

It was only a joke. Personally, I want extra damage from my Siege Tanks as their shells have to rain down farther to reach you poor, poor targets.

save that idea for SC3? might be better suited then.

i think their following wc3... with the high ground low ground thing.. whereby ranged units at lower ground can miss or something
That's cliffs you're talking about. A ranged unit on top of a cliff gets hit point advantage while a unit at the bottom of the cliff only have a 70% chance of hitting the enemy unit. This was present in starcraft 1 and units can't go up and down cliffs unless there's a ramp, and ramps are often congested when a mass army of units tries to squeeze through it.
What sordid mentioned is more of a visual enhancement to the game of SC2, where "buildable" terrains are not just plain flat but have slight gentle rise and drops. I think it can be implemented if Blizzard runs a 3D engine for the game.

That'd also be SC1 :)
SC1 had a terrain miss system where if you were on low ground, your units would only have a 70% chance of hitting high ground.
I'm almost positive Blizzard will put this back in because it is authentic SC1 tech :)

but that's already exist in SC1 oO
If u place a goon on a cliff and one on the ground and both shoot the one on the cliff will will win with well more HP!
omg... the grammar seems awful... is there any fire fox plug-in who correct it? I feel very bad about u when u have to read that **** :/

I could see there being a lot of interesting terrain features by release in order to showcase the new physics engine that Blizzard mentioned in the gameplay video. I mean, that was just a ramp going up a cliff but i'm guess that that sort of movement of debris can happen in many different areas. We've only seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to tilesets i'm sure. What I was really impressed with was how the missles fell to the ground in front of the mothership. Plus i'm wondering if the black holes with distort the terrain in anyway. We'll see!

Tip of the iceberg? I don't remember seeing any ice tilesets! (Sorry, couldn't help it!)

I mostly hope the tools are there in the editor. There's no reason everything should be either straight up or completely flat.

Do you think the editor will automatically place the hills/grass or will you have to make them by yourself. If you yourself had to make them then map making might be a lot more more annoying, which can discourage players which in turn leads to fewer maps.

i think it would be ezer withought hills i mean it just makes it sound more complex, and then every1 will have to try to fit there units on tiny hill just for a stratigic advantage and your need too micromanage even more, ugh doesent sound good
as for marinepower's question, i bet they will have a "randomize terrain/doodads" button so you dont have to work so hard on the map to make it look good.

They are adding in more hills to seperate skill level. If you are a good player you will constantly take advantage of hills wit your collossus. If you are mediocre you will just send it to attack. This is a good thing and i hope blizzard adds more stuff like this in. Its not a requirement to go on the hills, but if you do you will get a bonus.
