So I think it's pretty obvious that if Starcraft 2 is as successful as we all hope that they will make an expansion a year or so later. The question is, what do you think it will consist of?
Aside from the obvious things, new story lines, etc.
I think this is where the new race might be implemented. I think it was a great idea to only work on the 3 races for the original in able to perfect them and the balance. But after starcraft 2's release then they can concentrate on just one race. So here's what I am hoping to see for the expansion (I know, before the actual game is even out, kinda sad)
-a new race, preferably the Xel'Naga
-one new unit for each of the other races (late tech, early tech, who cares)
What would you guys like to see with the expansion?

I think it's pretty clear that they want to stick to just three and won't be adding a new race.
Anyway aside from more story I want:
-more units
-new structure(s)
-new upgrades

I'm personally just wanting something like Brood War in how the story line centered around the arrival of the UED. I personally loved the UED, so I'm hoping we can have a faction type thing like it.
You KNOW that eventually, there's gonna be put in a hero that was a son/daughter of one of our heroes now that ppl will end up saying they hate them and that their parents were better

I hope the UED return. They are badass like no other.
But I doubt (and would not like) the addition of a fourth race. Three is enough for StarCraft and will always be enough for StarCraft.
I mean, theres like two terran factions left, The Terran Dominion and Raynors Raiders. The Umojan Protectorate supposedly joined the dominion as they were with the Sons of Korhal when they beat the Confederacy. The Kel-Morian mining guild was supposedly wiped out/infested by the Zerg (while Fenix sat by and watched cause he was disgusted by the greed of the Kel-Morians)

Before wanting all this stuff, let’s be patient and wait until starcraft 2 comes out, then we’ll see what needs refurbishing.
There are:
2 Terran factions - Dominion + Raynor's team
1 Protoss faction - on Shakuras under Artanis's lead
1 Zerg faction - Kerrigan's swarm
1 unknown faction - Duran and his masters
So there won't be a need for another new Terran faction in the story because there's already more than every other races.

Maybe some little Zerg assault against the Earth? :)
Or destruction of Earth itself?
I dont expect the 4th race though.

And balancing a new race (let's call it 'Race x', just for the explaining) in a game that already has 3 races is very hard.
SC2 is gonna get 3 races, they will need to do the following for balancing:
-Balance Terran vs Protoss
-Balance Protoss vs Zerg
-Balance Zerg vs Terran
If you are gonna implend a new race you will need in the expansion you would need to;
-Balance Protoss vs Race X
-Balance Zerg vs Race X
-Balance Terran vs Race X
That is about equal as much balancing as in starcraft 2, they can't change the old units too much but that would destroy the gameplay and no one would be willing to play the add-on
Furthermore, they need to do the following:
-Implent new units for Protoss to balance them vs Race X
-Implent new units for Zerg to balance them vs Race X
-Implent new units for Terran to balance them vs Race X
-Balance the new Protoss units vs Zerg/Terran armies
-Balance the new Terran units vs Protoss/Zerg armies
-Balance the new Zerg units vs Terran/Protoss armies
In a game that is gonna be so balanced (well, I think it's gonna be very balanced) as starcraft 2 you can't just implent a whole new army, that's not gonna work unless you take a hell of alot time.
Also, the other races did get alot of new units but they still already had alot of history, heroes and artwork. Making a new army will need aditional history and ideas and that probably take a few years.

Yeah but its an expansion. And what expansion doesn't add new units, buildings, powers, etc.?

I can not believe you guys did not say this in any of your posts... I am disgusted. I would like to see the Master Chief.
;) Kidding.
Knowing Blizzard, they will release an expansion set with new units and abilities and another storyline to boot.

In SC2:Expansion, a great evil have just been partly vanquished, and one of the Dark, near-evil Heroes that helped destroy the evil has become deformed by Infestation and his own race is chasing him. He and his infested yet sentient water-based minions are joined by a revenge-lusted group of mutated, psionic terrans harrassed by normal, un-mutated Terrans and escape into another dimension torn by war and psionic storms, where they destroy an evil, infested warlord and close of warp gates to other dimensions in order to rule the dimension by themselves. Then the Dark, near-evil hero becomes it's king.
Meanwhile, Kerrigan makes her way to the new nesting area of the Overmind, who is calling out to her since the Dark, near-evil hero has been recruited by the great evil that was nearly vanquished, to destroy the Overmind.
Then, the Dark, near-evil hero and Kerrigan meet up at the base of the mountain where the Overmind nests. They fight, and Kerrigan manages to mortally wound the Dark, near-evil hero, and she makes her way up and then merges with the Overmind, creating a dual-personality Overmind that's so horribly powerful that the Dark, near-evil hero goes back to his alternative dimension and cries on his throne.
Hero, I agree with you on the problem of adding a new race. The three race already have their history with each other and players have found ways and strategies when it comes to facing certain types of races.
But I do look forward to new units, new technologies, and more upgrades.

I really hate the plot of warcraft 3 the frozen throne. And I particularly hate the part where they neglected to put the orcs in the storyline especially since they were one of the original race.
What ever happened to Arthas anyways...

He became the Lich King. I must say, I liked evil Arthas WAAAAYY more than good Arthas...good Arthas just annoyed the hell out of me. Even the humans...it wasn't really humans you were playing, you ended up playing the Blood Elves, but i can't complain, I actually liked playing them

Okay then kicking the two original races out of the main storyline was really dumb of them.
I mean what did he do after becoming the Lich King...

A new race, one of the following would interest me
-A highly cybronetic terran race from earth. (half human, half machine) (its been 10 years since anyone came from earth)
-Infested Terrans
-Xel'naga

they said they'd stick with the 3 fundamental races.

Apparently Ilidan becomes REALLY powerful due to some outside source in outland and he decides to re-confront Arthas, i cant remember it clearly or can honesly be bothered to write it ALL down.

Ahem. Is it me or does Xel'Naga sound awfully bad when you think of Starcraft 2 and the Naga from WC3 : FT?
paragon
07-10-2007, 03:35 AM
guess what. Xel'Naga have been a part of StarCraft's storyline from the beginning in 1997. Albeit they were only in the back story, they were there nonetheless. So, the Naga of WarCraft 3 THE Frozen Throne take their name from the Xel'Naga (or rather they both take their name from the Naga of Hindu and Buddhist mythology who are half-serpent half-human creatures who live in an underwater kingdom). I have no idea about the Xel though except that it is the Mayan word for 'spring' (the water kind not the season).

What I meant was maybe the Naga were inspired by the Xel'Naga's name also. So when I think of Naga-Xel'Naga...
It just tingles my feelers >.>

The Naga of WarCraft III are like the Naga of mythology while the Xel'Naga are not.

nothing, directly, but if you look at the expansion of interests and discussions in this thread, one can easily conclude that it has come to everyone's attention by a mixture of heavy thoughts and concrete links between every discussed subject ;D. (Don't you just love the way I talk?)
Anyways, my point is that it's possible to be the mythology Naga, or that maybe they took the name Naga and then they found out about the mythology and then decided to change them to the mythology-looking ones? Just meaning to say that, if they include a small race that you only play against, and possibly with in 1 mission (like in WC3 : FT) with only like 4 buildings and 6 units, it would end up being a nuisance, just like the Naga in WC3 : FT.
