I always thought that buying new games was like buying records or books, they would pile up for you use forever. But everytime we get a new PC I have the problem that more and more old games just aren't working anymore, I get the strangest of errors. Any of you guys ever have the problem that older games stopped working on newer systems?

What do you mean with 'compatibility modes'?

right click the shortcut of the game and go properties
there should be atleast these tabs: general, shortcut, compatibility
go to compatibility tab
under compatability mode, tick "run this program in compatibility mode for:" and then select the old windows version that you used that worked with your old game. windows 95/98 is usually the best
(of course this feature is only available on windows XP. not sure about other operating systems)

Some games just wont work for new computers because the technology is so far advanced and when they made the game they didn't imagine technology being so good.
Like some old windows 95 games will go super fast or the graphics will be all distorted and random and the sound won't work because they require the original sound blaster card.

The annoying thing with that is, if it ever happends to starcraft they will make patches for it so its compatible again, but theres alot of cool old games out there that aren't supported by the developers anymore, a real shame.

Ok. Now I have a really weird error. I'm trying to install myth II again, but everytime that I'm done with the install the map where its installed in just starts losing files and after a few seconds its empty again.... Freaky.

I think he's looking for actual solutions not philosophical fantasies. It's ghosts in the machine by the way.
"The ghost in the machine is British philosopher Gilbert Ryle's derogatory description for René Descartes' mind-body dualism. The phrase was introduced in Ryle's book The Concept of Mind, written in 1949, to highlight the absurdity of dualist systems like Descartes' where mental activity carries on in parallel to physical action, but where their means of interaction are unknown or, at best, speculative."

oh I use DOSbox for my newer computers...

They play the same, have the right sound, and it brings a sense of nostalgia to your newer computer. ^_^
