View Full Version : Beta Starcraft 2?

I for one don't like the concept. Not all of us (in fact, a very very large majority of us) don't live anywhere near where the event is being held. I personally don't have the cash to shell out and make it to the event. I mean, those who get to go already get a chance to play SC2 so that should be incentive enough to go. For me, all I see is less beta slots for the rest of us to have a chance to get into. I beta tested for Diablo II and I don't remember anything like this before it came out. Everyone had to sign up on the Blizzard website. I dunno, call me a sore loser for living in the east but come on, I can't be the only one sore about this. If they wanted to be fair about it they would do what Halo 3 did and release a beta code with another game, like Diablo II or SC1. I would go out and buy the games again just to play the SC2 beta! Ha... Oh well. Rant over.
I guess we can't really be sure if it is in fact StarCraft 2 beta spots that are to be given away at BlizzCon - it could just as well be for the next WoW expansion.
But even if it is for SC2, I can see some fairness in Blizzards decision, as much as I want a spot myself, exactly because many of the attendees will be traveling great distances to get there.

well, if you know you don't have the cash to get there, don't complain. you're gonna end up playing the REAL starcraft 2 some time soon anyway.

this is sooo off topic..
I do agree that it might be unfair for those who lives too far away.. but if you take a look at this from the blizzard point of view, people who goes to blizzcon 07 are truely starcraft maniacs and by going there they will already know a bt more about the game..
blizzard wants beta testers who will know a lot of stuff about the game in a very low amount of time.. so they can start working on balancing faster.. you can't balance when the players are n00bs

Well, I don't really care about the fact that people who go to BlizzCon get a spot in beta cause it makes sense. Though I wonder if they would give me (and the rest of the Project Revolution team) a beta spot because we love StarCraft so much we had the same vision to make it 3D.
MrFrancko
06-28-2007, 02:53 AM
Oh man, if it was based on how much you love Starcraft i'd get a spot in a second. I'm guessing that they will do some sort of lottery based on the most qualified people. Their Beta's are generally pretty small... At least Diablo II was so they want to make sure, as you said, that they have qualified people. The problem is that a lot of people who go to BlizzCon are just people who live in the area or the press. Those from far away are probably a small percentage of those in attendance. I agree though, if you're one of that percentage you're a bad ass and can I try and fit into your luggage?

it's perfectly on topic. he's complaining because other people can play the beta and he can't. sure i'd wish i could be there, but tough luck. that's life. besides it's a BETA!
ps. i am not questioning your love for starcraft.
I really want to beta test SC2. I doubt I'll see any action before open beta though. Sigh~
I may be able to secure some beta keys to give out to members. Stay tuned.
PS: sorry about the forums changing this way and that. Almost over ;p
did i mention i love you? lol.. but seriously,
if the people who spent money and time to go to blizzcon do get a SC2 beta (alpha?) invitation then thats great, the rest of us will be able to play some form of the beta eventually.
Not ready are you... much fear you have ;D

I like the idea! I would make it some sort of essay contest like: Why should you get the SC2 beta key? I wouldn't hold out too much for an open beta though. The open beta for Diablo II was just a stress test and only include like the first quest in act I. In SC you'd probably only be able to get on Bnet and play with one race with their first tier or something. We'll see though!

Hey they paid $100 so why not? Anyway we're still gonna get to play the full game (barring nuclear war, meteor strike, etc.) so it's not like we're really missing anything. And I'm sure that the internet will be flooded with pics, videos, and more after the event.
Why I should get a beta key? Because I asked nicely? Please?

I'll be betaing World in Conflict in July anyways. Though next year when SC2 beta is out... it'd be great to be able to help find any problems they have with that game.

You're the man. Want me to bear your children for a beta key?

Part of the reason why this is such a great community is that we have a killer admin. Kudos.

It's great that Blizzard is involving the community so much. Many (most) game companies do not do this except for their beta.
MrFrancko
06-29-2007, 05:46 PM
Yeah, Blizzard has always taken their community very seriously. They implement so many ideas that the community comes up with and makes sure that even the slightest detail in their games is dealt with. That's why they achieve near perfection with their games. If I were to add up the hours i've spent playing Blizzard games it would probably outnumber the rest combined! I can genuinely say I love Blizzard and I love the community that they create.

In WC3 on the battle.net site on your page it tells you how many hours you spent in game.
MrFrancko
06-29-2007, 06:01 PM
WC3 is really the only game I never played extensively online. It just wasn't a fit for my style of playing. SC and AoE2 are probably my two favorite RTS and WC3 really wasn't like either. I like armies of units instead of a few units and a hero. I did enjoy the single player though. I think the hours spent on SC, Diablo, Diablo II, WC1, WC2 and WoW are enough to make up for it.

When I looked at the hours spent for my level 26 WC3 account, I died a little inside. And then I stopped playing.

A beta is a limited release of the game to a select number of people before the game is completely finished. The point of it is to find any bugs and fix imbalances. Demos are released after the game is done and is a sneak peak of the retail game.

They were going for something similiar with WoW: Burning Crusade last Blizzcon. Only attendees would receive one. Yet i got a key in the mail to the beta even though i didn't attend. It may be something similiar with SC2, i dunno... although since WoW is a subscribing game, it's less likely that any of us would receive the key in the mail since that would require of you to not only subscribe to Blizzard's mail or some sh1t, but also hold an interest in SC, which everybody doesn't
Anyways, they'll figure something out. And if they don't, well then at least we will play the game on release day.
I will be chatting with Blizzard for some beta keys because there are a few members on these forums who really would really deserve it and would be able to offer Blizzard the feedback they need much more efficiently and better than most of the people who will attend Blizzcon.
Yeah that's true, most people just want to play the beta because they want to have fun, i realized this when i played on WoW: BC beta, everybody was demanding something of Blizzard in return for playing the beta, like giving them free stuff on their beta characters or transferring the characters to retail. They just didn't realize that the beta was a privelege, not a job. I'm going to quote something a guy said on the BC beta forums that i found very amusing, and true:
"Getting free items or transfers from Blizzard for playing the beta is like getting paid by your job for going on vacation."

I think that there is a high possibility that beta will be released sometime near the end of the year.

Elemen probably just means that he'd like the beta to just be ready when it's ready. Blizzard never rushes anything. They are in alpha, then they gotta do serious in house testing, and then a highly closed beta, and then maybe some of us will get to play a beta. Then they may do a limited open beta/bnet stress test. That's what they did with Diablo II.

In my experience a beta is either a very select group of people in the hundreds or thousands that check for bugs. After that they might, just might, depending on their server capacity, do a stress test beta that almost anyone can join. You download essentially a demo of the game and play it online just to make sure Bnet can handle it.

I dont think it will be released this year. By the looks of it even if there are units and the technologies and such it will take massive ammounts of time to get everything into the sort of balance we can expect from blizzard. there will probably be a limited sign-up closed beta testing and from there the open beta stress tests and then i expect there to be a lot of patches in the first few months following the release

True that, ElemenTT. People should just stop worrying about beta and start worrying about release instead, so that they can hype to some hellish extent and buy the game even though they will hate it, which they won't since anything with SC can't suck, not even a sequel. My humble opinion.

I think it is plausible that the beta is out this year. They seem to be a lot further along with the game when they announced it than they have been with games in the past. With a playable multiplayer at Blizzcon an online beta is easy to expect soon. Then again it is Blizzard, and they obviously aren't known for being timely.

Blizzcon is like E3 but it's only Blizzard games. They showcase what they are working on and sometimes reveal new things for the first time. I think they announced Brood War at one of the past Blizzcons. They are going to have a playable version of SC2 there so everyone is pretty pumped about all the new footage and information we're going to get.

But back to the original point, yes I agree with you. It's not fair to most that attends, considering that they want to go there because it's going to be a cool/kick-ass convention and be able to play games that isn't out yet. That is a pretty decent incentive for any gamers, noob or pro. Though in my opinion, considering that it is located in Los Angeles..which is being overrun by Koreans and Mexicans (yay! Azn pride!) If it were fair, in a sense that everyone had an equal chance of being eligible to be part of the beta, they would still have to be unfair to keep the numbers reasonable by selecting randomly from the pool of "everyone." And then, a smaller proportion of those selected would even care enough to be helpful. By drawing their arbitrary lines, they select those that would most help them with feedback, and in hype (free advertising!)

Tried to Wiki Blizzcon. They just said the last one was in 2005 but I don't think that's when the first one was. They've been doing them for a decent amount of time. They are only semi-annual though, hence why the last one was in 2005.
