I hated Age of Empires 2. I didn't play the others. The factions were far too similar. And I didn't like the gameplay at all.

The first one I loved when I was a kid, and in the second game I saw one of the comps was named after an English king that I'm related to.

I got number 2 and the expansion. I like 'em. Sure, the races are all the same (Except the Aztecs and Mayans in the expansion), but it's still a good amount of fun. The unique units especially are fun, and the races with what techs, units, and bonuses they have are historically accurate.

I got both AoE1 and AoE2 that came with the breakfast cereal. I didn't really like it that much though, too loyal to starcraft

The problem with AoE is that they are cut and paste races with like one or two special units. WC2 was like this and then when SC came out everyone loved how they were completely different and that has become the norm. Or rather should be the norm. Also, for the people who really want to fight in that time period, Rome: Total War and Medieval 2: Total War provide a much better experience for it because each race is different from the others.

I've played through both AoE1 and AoE2 and i will never waste so much time in my life ever again. Apart from playing SC2, that is...

I got AoE 1 in the breakfast cereal too. I played for quite a while, but I got very bored. Starcraft is probably the best strategy game I've ever played.

I've never played AoE 2 or 3.

Agreed, lol. I can't recall how many hours I wasted over that game.

The longness of the game is what made it fun, cause at the end of every mission both sides have these huge armies.

except that it get very repetitive very fast because you knew it would take so long to finish and it eventually became a chore.

I liked AOE2 at first, but it got old pretty quick. The most fun to be had was marching around with a huge group of longbowmen and annihilating any unit in your path. And the trebuchet's were pretty rad.

trebuchets were so slow. They were like siege tanks in that you had to set them up except they sucked because they were so weak and could not attack when not set up.

What do you expect? They weren't made like tanks, they are a support unit. I personally loved having them behind the lines to help me take out the important buildings before my men can break through to get there, but I always backed them up with Pikemen so I don't get a suprise calvary rush like I always do.

i hated the game anyways so it really doesn't matter.

i've got the 3rd, tho i seriously regret buying it now. AOE doesn't have nearly as many diversity. I mean, it's really just one race just with different skins and textures and sounds and whatever. Not to mention the units, it's mostly just a few numbers tweaked here and there and a couple of "special" units for each side.

yeah, my grandma got me age of empires 2 for christmas (i had asked for homeworld but she couldn't find it) so I figured hey this might be fun so I played it. Then I lost it a couple years ago and didn't really care at all. Thats the only CD i've lost.

You have to think about the ancient times though, they didn't have that many weapons to use. And the ones they had, everyone else had them too.

Look at the total war series, much better than age of empires part of which is because the units are not from a cookie cutter

Total War=Amazing.

Shogun total war was meh.
Medieval total war was the best.
Rome was a cpu eater.

Anyone played Total Annihilation? It's kinda similar to AoE in that the teams are pretty similar...only they're robots. But it was cool that there was user designed units you could download and play with. It did make things very hard to balance, but I found it fun nonetheless.

Moon Project had user designed units in that you could place any weapons you researched onto any of your base units. I hated that game because it was so slow. 8 hours for a mission? What the hell.

i v e played all 3
When i was little and new to the gaming world, i loved them.
I its true starcraft does have much more versatility between races, however,
with the expansion there are 8 similar european groups and 3 totally different natives.
Plus they are realeasing another expansion with 3 new asian groups
So with the main game and the expansions, there ought to be much more versatility.
Plus the graphics are pretty good.

But in the end, Starcraft has always been a a great game and fun to play years after it became considered "old"

It is a classic and i expect SC2 to be just the same. It is going to Blow all AOE gamers away.
