A brain teaser and a chance to earn some free minerals. The first person to post the correct answer will win 1000 minerals from me. Here we go:

Four people went hiking together and they got lost. The sun has set, they are now in total darkness, and they came across a hang bridge that they decided that they would need to cross.

The hange bridge is in poor shape with missing sections, and it can only support two people at a time. They only have one flashlight, so they would need to cross two at a time, and have one person return with the flashlight to the other side so others may cross.

The four are all capable of crossing the bridge at different rates individually. The fastest guy can cross the bridge in one minute, the second guy can do it in two minutes, the third guy can do it in five, and the slowest guy can do it in ten minutes. But since they have to share one flashlight per two man team, they would always have to match the speed of the slowest person at each crossing. For instance, even though the 1 minute guy can cross in only a minute when he's by himself, if he was to cross with the 10 minute guy, he would have to slow down to cross in 10 minutes because they are sharing one flashlight.

You need to get all of them across the hang bridge in 17 minutes.

Example:

1-min guy & 2-min guy cross = 2 minutes
1-min guy returns with flashlight = +1 minute = 3 minutes
1-min guy & 5-min guy cross = +5 min = 8 min
1-min guy returns w/ flashlight = +1 min = 9 min
1-min guy & 10-min guy cross = +10 min
TOTAL = 19 minutes

You can change the crossing order any way you like, but be sure to do it in 17 minutes.

To any guests reading this, if you know the answer, quickly register and post it up. As a welcome gift, I will reward an extra 1000 minerals on top of the 1000 to any new members with the correct answer. This is your chance to register and start with 1000 minerals right off the bat.

Ah heck, if the reply with the correct answer posted reads a post count of 20 or less when I see it, I'll give a bonus 500 minerals to that too. Good luck.

I will take a crack at this! :thumbup:

BAH!

EDIT -

A. 1 Minute Man
B. 2 Minute Man
C. 5 Minute Man
D. 10 Minute Man

A + B = 2 Minutes
B = +2 = 4 Minutes
C + D = +10 = 14 Minutes
A = +1 = 15 Minutes
A + B = +2 = 17 Minutes

Nikzad

1-min guy & 2-min guy cross = 2 minutes
1-min guy returns with flashlight = +1 minute = 3 minutes
5-min guy & 10-min guy cross = +10 min = 13 min
2-min guy returns w/ flashlight = +2 min = 15 min
1-min guy & 2-min guy cross = +2 min
TOTAL = 17 minutes

DARN IT 2 people already >.<
i know a different form of this one.
like a grandma, mom, sister, brother
grandma=10, mom=5, sister=2, brother=1
they are crossing a bridge at midnight with 1 flashlight. and one guy has to go back to get another person since they only have 1 flashlight. same concept >.< you should have made them P.M. AND more than one prize. like 2-5 places get prizes or something. hmm i'll P.M. you anyways

Edit: what happened to the original thread that Zeratul started?

ImaGiNe. is the first to post a reply with the correct answer.  Even though it was edited, the time of last edit still appear to be earlier than Nikzad's first reply.  However, ImaGiNe.'s final edit and Nikzad's first reply are posted almost simultaneously, being only 20 seconds apart.  So out of fairness and consideration to things like latency, I am declaring both of them winners.

Congratulations to ImaGiNe. and Nikzad.  I have sent 1000 minerals each to both posters.

Edit: what happened to the original thread that Zeratul started?

What original thread?  Zeratul already posted this same brain teaser?  Oh noes~!!  >.<

EDIT  ================================================== ==========================

I got a few more animal related ones, I'll put them up.  I guess I'll make this Remy's puzzle corner.

I'm going to post one at a time and wait for a reply with the correct answer, then post the next one and so on.  I will not be acknowledging posts with edits anymore, only unedited replies will count.  Do not PM me with answers, replies only.

Ok, here we go.

"How do you get a giraffe into a refrigerator?"

I'll start with 50 minerals on this one and go up from there.  50 minerals to the first unedited reply with the correct answer, good luck.

The giraffe needs to be alive when it's inside the fridge or...? ;D

GuiMontag
07-04-2007, 02:26 PM
1.you freeze the giraffe,
2. then you chop it up into little cubs
3. open the fridge
4. neatly stack them inside the refrigerator.
5. close fridge :P

ImaGiNe.
07-04-2007, 02:34 PM
WOW! I never thought I would hear this one again!

First you open the door of the refrigerator, put the giraffe inside, then close it.

Goooooo Elementary!

Remy
07-04-2007, 02:44 PM
Congratulations to ImaGiNe. who wins 50 minerals for the first correct reply.

Now the next one for 100 minerals.

"How do you get an elephant into a refrigerator?"

3. put in elephant

Remy
07-04-2007, 03:34 PM
GuiMontag's answer is close enough. I don't know about any frozen cubes but the answer is open door, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant, close the door.

Congratulations to GuiMontag, winner of 100 minerals.

Since we're doing animals, let's stay on that theme. Here's the next one for 150 minerals.

"Lion, the mighty king of beasts and all animals, decided one day to hold a grand meeting. He then proceeded to summon all animals in his vast kingdom to come and attend this meeting. Animals great and small, all scurried along and made it to the meeting. The snake was there, the monkey was there, the cow was there, the bear was there, the gazelle was there, the panda was there, the rabbit was there, the chicken was there, the wolf was there. But there was one animal that wasn't there. Who wasn't at the Lion's meeting?"

LOL, congratulations GM_K, you finally googled one first. You win 150 minerals.

I need to stop giving out ones that can easily be googled. OK, I got another one, this one for 200 minerals.

ooooo I got a riddle too. 250 minerals for anyone that gets it.

A midget lives on the 50th floor of an apartment. He takes the elevator down to the lobby and exits out to go to work. When he comes back from work, he takes the elevator up 30 floors and then he gets out and walks up 20 flights of stairs to his floor. Why didn't he just take the elevator up to his floor?

haha something in that clue just gives it away if you think about it ^_^

"A dog decided to cross the desert. He packed and brought plenty food and water, but he died. Why did the dog die in the desert?"
1) Dogs can't pack
2) Due to the inability to pack, said dog could not bring any of the food and water
3) Therefore logically the dog would die due to lack of water and food
4) However, since it's a riddle it doesn't really have to follow logic
5) You've said that it doesn't have anything to do with the food or water
6) Riddles generally have something in the specific wording which reveals the answer
7) Since the death has nothing to do with the food or water then either the answer to the riddle is not the answer to the question posed in the riddle or the second sentence is useless except the for the last part so then the riddle would be "A dog decided to cross the desert. He died. Why did the dog die in the desert?"
8) Are you sure you wrote down the riddle exactly how you read it?
If you did then:
The dog didn't die in the desert.

The riddle just states that he died and then asks you why the dog died in the desert. However, it does not state that the dog died in the desert, you just infer that from the last sentence.

Wow! You put way too much thought into this riddle. This is a situational type of riddle, something that requires you to think outside the box and something I am not too great with.

Perhaps the dog is part of a rescue mission to transport food and water to stricken areas in the desert and was planning on airlifting survivors to safety but could not, because of the weight of the survivors, the plane could not make the full trip across the desert, so the dog was thrown out of the plane to reduce the weight.

Sorry if the answer was disappointing. But nothing says brain teasers have to have clues. Nonsense logic brain teasers usually test the ability to creatively think outside the box or against usual assumptions, such as the giraffe one.

Anyway, here's the next one for 250 minerals.

"There was a ship that was used for taking tourists out to see the ocean. This ship could only carry a maximum of exactly 50 passengers, including captain and crew. One day, as usual, tourists got in line to get on the ship for the tour. They all proceeded to board the ship one by one, and the ship boarded up to its 49th passenger, but at the end of the line was a woman 8-months pregnant as the 50th and final passenger. The captain thought about it for just a second then proceeded to let the pregnant woman onboard. But as soon as the ship left the dock, it immediately sank into the ocean. Why did the ship sink into the ocean?"

Good luck, 250 minerals for the first reply with the correct answer.

A mother that is 8-months pregnant can give birth to the baby and the baby can survive. Therefore the baby can be considered a person which would exceed the limit of the ship by one person.

proswimma

thats not even really how those boats work they fit more than the "max" number... of course the last one had to do with a ****ing fire hydrant cause of course dogs couldn't possibly go to the bathroom without those. I mean, dog's were only around since the invention of the fire hydrant, before that there were no dogs because they all would have died from not being able to go to the bathroom.

There were 50 passengers total if you just count the pregnant woman as one. However it can only hold 50 people so the 50 count of passengers did not include the captain and the crew. So, however many crewmen there were plus the captain put it over 50 people on board.

This ship could only carry a maximum of exactly 50 passengers, including captain and crew.

This is like the key statement in my opinion.

So the previous answers stated are prolly the only possibilities.

I'll go out on a limb and say that there was a hole on the ship before and it sunk lol

I knew it couldn't have been because of the baby ;p Nice work imaGINe, how'd you think of that ???

First off, I told FlyingTiger my reason:
When viewing the ocean, you are not limited to the surface. It only makes sense as the ship sank, it is possibly an underwater tour.
The ocean is not just limited to the surface. A ship sinks immediately and it deals with the ocean? I put the pieces together. It could be an underwater adventure tour, so I said it was a submarine. Also for those who so adamantly defended that the crew was not included, it says so right here:

This ship could only carry a maximum of exactly 50 passengers, including captain and crew.
The riddle did not mention anything about weight capacity and did mention only the amount of people allowed inside at any one time. One person can easily weigh 300 lbs. and that should account for two or more passengers, but the riddle did not mention that people who are morbidly obese or just humongous were not allowed to board onto the ship. A pregnant lady could weigh 115 lbs. including the baby, but they are still one entity, so the baby's presence could not have sunk the ship.

I originally started this as my "relax, have fun, take my minerals for free" thread, but I think it may be wise for me to just leave it alone now. People are taking non-sense logic brain teasers too seriously.

Mike Peters was surprised to see his window slide open and was positively shocked when he saw two strangers climb inside. What transpired next could only be described as a despicable act of thievery. Mike watched with rapt fascination as the two thieves systematically began to remove the priceless Persian carpets, artwork, and jewelry. Having stripped the room, the thieves climbed back out the window. Incredibly, Mike went back to what he had been doing before the thieves arrived and soon he'd forgotten about the entire incident. Why wouldn't Mike, who was in perfect health, have tried to stop the thieves or at the very least call the police after they had left?

During WWII, there was a bridge connecting Germany and Switzerland, and on the German side, there was a sentry tower with a guard in it. He would come out every three minutes to check on the bridge, and he had orders to turn back anyone who tried to get into Germany, and shoot anyone trying to escape without a pass. A wise king devised a contest to see who would receive the Princess' hand in marriage. The Princess was put in a 50x50 foot carpeted room. Each of her four suitors were put in one corner of the room with a small box to stand on. The first one to touch the Princess hand would be the winner and become the new King.
The rules of the test were that the contestants could not walk over the carpet, cross the plane of the carpet, or hang from anything; nor could they use anything but their body and wits (i.e. no magic or telepathy, nor any items such as ladders, block and tackles etc). One suitor figured out a way and married the Princess and became the new King. What did he do?

I see that this thread has been moving along nicely while I was away. Let me put up some new ones.

A) "What is the biggest difference between Batman and Superman?"

B) "A cow was walking, it was heading South. It then makes a right turn, three left turns, an 180-degree turn, 27 right turns, and finally three left turns. Which way is the cow's tail pointing?"

For brain teaser A, please don't cite any canon facts like their origins and all that. For brain teaser B, you can think of all left and right turns as exactly 90-degrees. Both of these are a little silly, both of them for 100 minerals a piece.

And to PowerkickasS, does yours involve any super powers? The phone booth reminded me of Superman.

hillzagold

A) "What is the biggest difference between Batman and Superman?"

one of them is human
or, batman has no real powers
or, batman isn't gay
or, they have different color costume schemes

B) "A cow was walking, it was heading South. It then makes a right turn, three left turns, an 180-degree turn, 27 right turns, and finally three left turns. Which way is the cow's tail pointing?"

assuming the cow isn't in water or floating in zero-G, the tail is pointing down

for the ring one, were the cops stupid or blind?

are the number of underscores representative of the number of letters in the missing words?

ImaGiNe. is rocking hard lol. Kicking ass left and right. Probably got the correct answer to Alukard's too.

No one's gotten the Batman/Superman one correct yet. I'm not sure if anyone will though, it's kinda silly.

A hint, the difference is mainly aesthetic. If after a while no one gets it, I'm just gonna reveal the answer and give out a different one.

yeah he got it

Revealing answer to "What is the biggest difference between Batman and Superman?"

The answer is:  Superman wears his underwear over his tights, but Batman also wears one over his head.

New one for 300 minerals.

"Two men each brought his son, and together they all went to a circus in town.  On a sign at the front entrance, it says that admissions are $10 per person paid in cash at the gate to the clown.  However, when the two fathers and two sons got in, they only ended up paying $30 total.  Why is that?"

Again, same as always.  First correct reply yada yada~~ no edits yada yada~~ 300 minerals, good luck.

heres 1, for a pet probe answer this......
if you dont understand too bad thats part of the problem

qwert
x4
=trewq
q=? w=? e=? r=? t=?

dont cheat.. hehe this is open for 1 day if nobody gets it by then then ill tell the answer

EDIT: oh yeah rules: no edits, first 1 with correct answer wins, and if you can tell me how u figured it out.

PowerkickasS
07-15-2007, 01:34 PM
damn cant mathematically figure this out =(
unless each letter can have more than one digit.....

EDIT:
Q = 8 / 17 / 10 / 1 / 6 / 1
W = 5 / 23 / 4 / 4 / 9 / 4
E = 5 / 5 / 22 / 4 / 5 / 0
R = 9 / 18 / 9 / 9 / 7 / 9
T = 2 / 20 / 7 / 7 / 2 / 7

x 4

T = 2 / 20 / 7 / 7 / 2 / 7
R = 9 / 18 / 9 / 9 / 7 / 9
E = 5 / 5 / 22 / 4 / 5 / 0
W = 5 / 23 / 4 / 4 / 9 / 4
Q = 8 / 17 / 10 / 1 / 6 / 1

can you gimme a hint? does the answer having anything relating to those figures? o.0

tweakismyname
07-16-2007, 12:29 AM
ok heres you hint, each letter stands for a number 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-0 one of those and no 2 letters are the same number, figure the rest out,
its basic arithmetic principles, try figureing out what numbers a letter cant be then do guesswork from there if you still need help

i figured this same problem out when i was 11 in algebra class with no help and it only took 15 minnutes
