The gratuitous lack of pirates in our media? I mean, ninjas have hundreds of movies, are in many games, heck, I've even heard ninja songs! Pirates have a couple of movies, always as the bad dudes, 'cept in Pirates 1, 2, and 3, and are sometimes cannon fodder enemies in games. Where's the love!?!?

Ninjas were surrounded by an air of "mystique" and even were assumed to be somewhat superhuman. Pirates, on the other hand, are viewed mostly (not my opinion, just comparing popular opinion) as thieves. Ninjas killed and whatnot for a lord; pirates pillaged and killed for themselves. Acting for one's self doesn't have quite the prestige as selflessly acting for another.

Then again, it could just be the black. Chicks dig the black. :p

What?! The whole ninja-pirate war thing is going on only because ninjas thought that it'd be funny (acording to Dr MacNinja anyway)

It also depends on media are you talking about, in many webcomics there are usually both pirates & ninjas, somewhere they were even worried there's not enough ninja with whole Pirates of the Carribean (sp?) going on everywhere.

Popularity has nothing to do with quantity.

Dude, Dr. McNinja only had one storyline with pirates. And in my opening post, I talked about movies and video games. I mean, I can think of two games where you're a pirate. That's it.

Actually...i find that our country is going through a large "pirate phase." A lot of stuff in the country is associated largely with pirates, examples being: Sports teams (Raiders, Bucs, Pirates), any water amusement park, commercials (ever seen that one IHOP commercial with the pirate yeling TREASURE?), stealing is now also more associated with pirates now as opposed to ninjas, etc. The whole pirate thing started to get big around the time Pirates 1 came out...after that it became the age of the pirate.

Hehe, sorry if I make a bad arguement for this, actually, if you read A Decade of Curious People and Dangerous Ideas by Chuck Klosterman, he makes this entire essay about how America seems to be obsessed with Pirates :P

Neh, I always associated Han Solo as a space pirate, i dunno, just something i did :P And i guess you're right...Barbossa lines are better than Jack Sparrow ones

Eh...*shrug* I've only seen the ENTIRE trilogy like once in my entire life and Empire only twice so i guess im not as savvy with star wars as others are (NERDS! :P), which is kinda odd, cuz I mention both han solo and the death star a lot in this forum

pirate movies were being made 30-60 years ago. When the majority of the public realised that most pirates would have been homosexual they lost interest. :P

You know what is really sweet? If you think about it, back in the day in Japan, samurai were like the Marines of Japan (I know, a bit disrespectful to the samurai, who were necessarily more cultured and educated) and ninjas were like the freaking Delta Force or Spec Ops assassins of Japan. I find that sort of cultural parallel really cool

my personal favorite idea for a game is something I made up myself, making fun of those overly dark and dramatic video games:

Samurai - their swords were the so strong. With correct hand-placement and their training in sword fighting, they could generate enough force with their kitanas to cut a person in half with one blow.
