We all have games that are dear to our hearts....but there are also the LEGENDARY games, the games that sparked our imagination, stunned us with its story, made us LOVE the fact that we have video games.

Now I want to know...what would you guys say are the most legendary games ever. Wether you've played it or not, tell us which games are probably the games that makes said genre what it is today.

What I got so far are: RTS --Starcraft (of course)
RPG--FF7

Sorry, I'm having a brain clog right now, which is why I need all of you to help me out ;D

(FTP) MMORPG - SilkRoad Online, PC.

Why dont you just ask the people for their favourite games? Cause that's what you're getting.

Legendary games are games that *everyone* knows about. Say, Tetris and Super Mario. FFVII and most games mentioned here aren't even remotely legendary. :P

FF7 i guess... never really got into it
Gosh i cant believe im mentioning this (because im sure most people in this forums would say this didnt make them love video games) The Sims - dumb game (imo) but it had like 20 expansion packs and was the top seller for a very long time.

Real TIme Strategy: Warcraft 1
Blizzard's very first game that I found put Blizzard on the map of best gaming company's of all time, or atleast helped it.

Action: God of War
I've only started 1 and I got the second game but so far, it blows the togas off the other Action games I've played.

Puzzle: Lode Runner: The Legend Returns
I pooled hours into this game and it gets credit for staying clever even after 150 levels. The 3d sequel wasn't as great.

First Person Shooter: Quake II
Quake II was pretty badass and it only jumps up on top for the BFG and setting a twisted plot for Quake 4. Keep on bunny hopping everyone.

Role Playing Game: Diablo II
I honestly prefer playing this over World of Warcraft. You have unlimited gameplay in this. There's the challenge of hitting level 99 and getting the best items possible. Leveling was fast and new players can pick up this game with no knowledge of the Diablo games and still wind up spanking the three brothers of Hell for being bad boys.

that and playing with people like yo-yos by grabbing them in midair, stabbing them, throwing them to the ground, pulling them back to you and bashing your fist into their faces

and then repeated it in varying and incrementally increasing instances every time a new enemy were introduced (minotaur, centaur, ogres with bone clubs at the entrance to the Temple) and then all of them all over again after you get the you-know-what

I don't play much games, especially games on the other platforms. So my list kind of suck.

Super Smash Brothers - always good fun and good laughs, one of my retarded friend even swallowed his retainer down his throat because he was laughing too hard.

Grand Theft Auto, VC and SA - This is always the perfect to burn time. Drive around killing people. The story in better in Vice City though. I don't like San Andreas's story but the maps are just excellent.

Midnight Club 2 - ever wondered where my name originated from? :P This is a street racing game, it's also the first game that took the title of "my favourite game ever" from Starcraft. This game is not like the crappy Need for Speed series. It's a really sick street racing game, really makes you feel like part of the story. And it's made by the same company that made GTA, so you know it's good!

CPAL (the legend of the sword and fairy) - an RPG, a very very good and touching storying line. This is my first "favourite game ever", but was knocked off the title by Starcraft.

Street Fighter series - yes yes this is like old, but I still have heaps of good memories of playing it.

Starcraft - saved the best til last :P

Super Mario 64.

This game is so unique because of how it's now linear at all and almost every star can be reached in a non-legit way.. watching a speedrun of this game is often better than watching the average movie.

The first time I played SM64 (which is not so long ago) I was septical (sp?) but it's not in my top10 video games.

you gotta add this to your list.. it's a platform game right?

it's one of the game that makes the N64 needed for any gamers.

I actually recently found a Gamepro that had like the 52 most revolutionary games of all time on it. SC was like number 19, the highest FPS was Goldeneye I believe (2nd highest was Doom), surprisingly WoW was number 4, Ocarina of Time was number 3, GTA3 was number one I believe. It was actually quite interesting.

Civilization 2 was the first game I could play hours on end and still love it. Civ 4 nearly matched it, but it couldn't live up to it's predecessor.

Starcraft is the single greatest RTS i've ever played and I would still be playing it if not for my pesky router and those meddling kids.

Doom introduced me to RTS and for that, I will always regard it as a legend, as it really did revolutionize FPS.

Many of you will prolly not consider it as such, but really it was an innovator and one of the only other games that could have me playing from morning till night. Battlefield 1942. Amazing game. Simply amazing. (BF2 is probably my favourite FPS currently, however, it's not really a legend as its fairly recent.)

Command & Conquer Original for introducing me to RTS and to the single most wicked selection for in-game music. I still have C&C Thang on my computer and is now one of my ring-tones.

Rainbow Six. The first true tactical FPS and it was just downright pimp. Vegas looks to be amazing as well, and I'll be buying that shortly.

Oh and RPGs? Theres three that standout in my mind as being both legends in their time and as being some of the greatest games you can still play and enjoy to this day.

Chrono Trigger. Single greatest RPG i've ever played in my life. I've yet to find one that tops it. My favourite game to play on my emulator and nothing can really compare.

Baldurs Gate 1 & 2. Single greatest storyline i've ever been emersed in while playing an RPG. And the flexibility of what you could do was just astounding.

Though technically an "Action Adventure" it's been classified as an RPG several times. Zelda. I own every single one except for the gameboy/DS/GBA versions. It's the one game that can have it's story re-hashed over and over and still be the greatest game of the year.

Heroes of Might and Magic 2. Nuff said.

Shadowdragon
07-23-2007, 04:04 PM
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 for me. It was the first strategy game I think I ever played. My favorite memory was playing it with one of my friends in a room recently painted, Listening to sensamia street over and over, laughing every time. I think that's when I lost the ability to do math.

Anyway, the second best was Homeworld. Starcraft comes in at third.
Civ4 was awesome with a nuke mod (destroyed cities completly)

And as for Age of Empires...
Three is proabably the best. I still play it with my friends (Russia FTW).
You could throw in Resident Evil if you wanted to...but it was more fun to watch than play. Try playing it at three am with 4 people watching you...

"Go into the damn the closet wiene boy!"
"No, something is going to kill me!!!"
"Go!"
"Fine, jebus, fine!"
*Creak*
"Look, nothing happened"
"Shut it. How do you move this box?!?"
"I don't know!"
"Go read it online"
"It just says push the box"
"Dammit, that doesn't help!"
30 minutes later
"Oh, you have to press A"
"!@#&$%*%($U%#*@%&#%*^&"

The most legendary game for playing with buddies was Aliens vs Predator. You turned off your lights. You stayed absolutely quiet, and you played as marines. And I guarantee by the end of it, you were screaming "AHHHHHHHHHHHH" while blasting away at aliens.

RPG- Legend of Dragoon- the storyline was good, sad that the LoD 2 was cancelled

07-24-2007, 05:27 AM
Hmm, Doom and Quake 2 introduced me to FPS's, they are both legendary in their own way. Warcraft 2 and Age of Empires 1 got me into RTS's both of which I think are spectacular games, with the exception of WC2 just being the same thing with different skins.. ugh.

F.E.A.R. got me into horror-FPS's. Doom 3 was supposed to be scary, some scenes were very VERY creepy, but it didn't live up to the Originial Doom's run-and-gun tactics. Although this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VGl-jZ4zj0) will always scare the bejesus out of me in broad daylight.

SirBaron
07-24-2007, 09:10 AM
In the FPS (horror) genre, F.E.A.R easily takes 1st place. F.E.A.R is like... "safe" fright, while Extraction Point is like "unsafe, dangerous, frickin paranoid" fright... in F.E.A.R original, at least one had Betters (briefing dude) to chatter in your ear, in Extraction Point you got none...

what do you mean? Wind Waker was awesome! All of that sailing didn't thoroughly engross you? You didn't like getting that flute that let you go to tornado squares on the map that were always equidistant from the place you were trying to get to so that you were usually better off just setting a course and getting a snack?

Shadowdragon
07-24-2007, 03:16 PM
I never played Wind Waker myself. The Twilight Princess was a bit o' fun. Ocarina of Time depresses me, because I know that's probably going to be the best Zelda ever, so I don't think anything will beat it in my mind. The Twilight Princess came pretty close, but in the end it was just reaching for the moon.

Than again, you never know what the future may hold. Hell, maybe one day i'll be working on the next big game. It's not very likely, but at least it's not outside the realm of possiblity.

I played Wind Waker, but it did not have that "epic" attitude which I look for in a Zelda game. They made it too "fun" in a way. Ocarina of Time had a better story, and there where more easter eggs in it, like the "Nintendo Room" in Hyrule Castle Courtyard.

Here is my list of revolutionary/legendary games. They were either the first of their kind, best of their kind, and all inspired similar games.

Starcraft for PC - revolutionary and excellent RTS game
Goldeneye 007 for Nintendo 64 - early first-person shooter, inspired many others, unique multiplayer
Halo for X-Box - excellent first-person shooter, revolutionized online play
World of Warcraft for PC - even though I don't play it, enjoyed by many and easily best of it's genre
X-Wing for PC - great flight simulator and Star Wars game, inspired TIE Fighter and lots of others
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 64 - arguably one of the best games ever

I am sure I am missing a lot of classics, especially really old games. Also includes no Playstation/Sony games, but that is because I am a PC/X-Box kind of guy.

I can´t belive no one mentioned Deus Ex yet (RPG-FPS).

Also the Thief series is the true father of the "sneakers" (MGS is still great though). The cradle level in the 3rd part is truly epic - "It´s still warm... GREAT".

Planescape: Torment is a Jewel especially if you don´t want cliches

Serious Sam, the most entertaning Graphics demo (no joke, after they finished it they realized it was good enough to be sold, it was intended to show off their engines ability to display huge areals.) 15 Mins of mindless shooting never hurt anyone ;)

Secret of Mana was so good it spawned a fanproject to Translate the sequel (actually prequel)wich was never "officially" localized in the West.

Adventures? Anything by Lucas Arts basically, Fate of Atlantis was my first game ever! And I still know the "bones song" from Monkey Island 2...

Thats it for now.

Yes, this was one of the best and most influential games for me as well.

My favourite game is the Heroes of Might and Magic series.

Doom is the official Father of FPS.

How so, though? It's like overlooking Dune 2 and saying Warcraft is the father of RTS?!

As for adventures, yes, Manic Mansion and especially Day of the Tentacle were fabulous ones, it's just that I think Monkey Island (especially #2) is the best of them all.

I'm sorry to say, but the most legendary game has to be Super Mario Bros for the NES.
Everyone knows that game including the elderly people. Although Starcraft is huge, it really can't touch the Mario bros.

Mario bros is like the symbol of video games. Basically everyone in the world knows who Mario Bros is (not the case for SC or most other games :-\)

Thats just 'time spirit', if you were the age you are now at the time that super mario came out you would have sayd: Yeah its great! But its not a classic like pong or space invaders!

anyone mentioned everquest?

Maybe if you want to mention games that were legendary for their pure evilness.

The original prince of persia is a legendary game. The original Myth would also fall into that catagory. I would also say System Shock for mixing FPS and RPG elements together in the same way that makes BioShock so popular now.

I'm thinking and has anyone mentioned Tomb Raider yet?

Nobody has mentioned Tomb Raider!
How could we forget about it?
It's a great game!

Yes, those are popular also because they are true classics. But Mario is basically the symbol of all video games. Everyone including non-gamers know what Mario is. Heck even my parents know who he is (but they don't know what pong or space invaders are). I'll ask more people but I'm sure more people know Mario then they know Pong or space invaders.

Another legendary game I forgot to mention is Tetris. That game could probably replace Mario as the most legendary game of all time.

Asked 2 of my uncles and aunties.
None of them know what pong is.

But they do know what Mario and Tetris are ;)

NetHack is known for difficulty but also fairness.

Gouls´n´Goblins is known for evilness. Who didn´t want to throw the controller out of the window after reaching the final Boss for the first time? Well first you are in a state of denial but once you accept that you have to do the whole torture AGAIN! With a ****ty weapon to boot!

I've read once of another rogue-like game where creators considered ways to beat final boss cheating. don't remember title though :/

That might be Nethack since you can´t "kill" the characters that could be considered Bosses. You can only slow them down.

The Master of Orion was a masterpiece!
UFO -Enemy Unknown - spent a large part of my life killing aliens
System Shock 2 - i suppose the most exciting game with a thrilling atmosphere. Upgrade system, 1-big-level system, quests - all came from there.

Nope, I'm certain it was not about NetHack, must've been something even harder
