View Full Version : Mothership's role in Story
Many of us have been wondering of late about the story line of sc2 and many speculations have poped up most of which including Duran and the Xel'naga however i would like to state my idea about the role of the infamous mothership shown in the demo.
From the artwork/gameplay video i can determan that the mothership is a heavly armored protoss city with a huge girth. The size of the mothership and the fact that it may also serve as a city has made me ponder a possible protoss introduction:
It has been (insert number of years) since the fall of auir and the remaining protoss which live on shakurus are in danger as the warp gate linking auir and shakurus has been reactivated and several waves of zerg have come throught. Althought the planet has escaped total infestation the constant attacks would have made it only a matter of time before the protoss were overrun. In responce the protoss gathered together all known ships left and constructed a giant motheship that would carry the remaining protoss to another planet before shakurus was overrun. This ship (the mothership) would also serve as an extremly powerful war machine that would be used after they resettled on (insert safe planet in which protoss will land mothership and retake auir). Judgeing by the size of it it also seems the ship may be able to land and somehow convert itself into a "quick pack roll out city" to unload the supplies needed. Also during the mass exodus all building could be easily made into "warp buildings" and stored in an energy matrix inside the mothership which would make "unpacking" and re settling of any planet very quick.
Yes i know it doesn't seem that likely but wth something the size of the mothership it has to have some major role in the storyline.
Note: This is only intended to be the beginning and not the end of the storyline.
Or Maybe not......

I think I've read somewhere that the Conclave are the ones who built and command the Mothership.

I bet it's where the conclave that used to live on Auir resides. I only think this because that is what Blizzard said.

I'll go with my own that its some long lost artifact or xelnaga ship that was recently recovered

I believe the conclave was killed off in the original sc1 during the invasion of auir and yes the mothership may have been built by the conclave but still that maters not to my theory as maybe in the first few missions you must sneak through the warp gate to auir, find the mothership, and get it into orbit within a certin matter of time.

Very interesting idea and it would make for a good cinematic:
Area: middle of desert in auir
Scene: Mothership recovery
What happen's:
Group of hydra's are scouting in desert, sand under them begins to move upward, Hydra's looks around but see nothing, sudden large wall of sand appears under hydras and kills them, camera zooms out and the outline of mothership appears in sand, sand "flows" off and mothership appears, mothership turns on lights, slowly moves towards orbit, End of cinematic.

I remember reading something about a "Xel'Naga WorldShip", I wonder if the Mothership is somewhat of an off-shoot of this?

Ah yes the "worldships". Well to say the least the mother ship may indeed be a "worldship" but i slightly am skeptical of that as "worldships" have been seen in many other sci fi things and they always are the size of a planet, hence the name. I have also seen many "motherships" and most of them are the size of a city.

i'm bored of the protoss story line where they are just trying to survive or find a planet to populate. I hope they use the mother ship as more a weapon to try to rule the universe than just trying to clear a planet of zerg.

Blizzard still said that the conclave live in the mothership in StarCraft 2. So clearly they were not killed off.

That's odd zeatul made a referance to the conclave being killed in one of the bw mission briefings

the "city" in the mothership seems a bit too small to live in. Lol, sorry for being so nit-picky, It just bother's me. How can anything besides the pilot and the crew live in that?

nearly everything is out of scale in Starcraft, so that doesn't matter much
I agree with DontHate. Many people thinks the mothership is a floating city where many Protoss would reside in there. But it's more like a powered up battlecruiser with powerful spell casting ability. So it's a warship to be sent out to battlefields to aid other units.
I highly doubt the mothership (or the technology to build one) is that of Xel'Naga's legacy. I personally believe the surviving Protoss on Shakuras invented and constructed it. Given the fact that all three races are constantly evolving and developing new technologies.

zealots: Mommy, Mommy! Where is my mommy? I'ma go search for my mom if that's the last thing I'll do before I die!!!
*1000 years later* *mothership created*
zealots: MOTHER!!! FINALLY!! :)
*yamatos the mothership with 5 BCs*
zealots: ...where the * are the freakin Dragoons....

The mothership would be very large if it were to scale, but in terms of worldship think more deathstar like only without the ability to destroy a planet.. or maybe with the ability :o

i think that the mothership is a city, but because it has leaders of the conclave piloting it, it focuses their power as well as that of the protoss living on it to cast very powerful spells.

i think it is the uber unit that they use in case of emergency lol. and i also think it's a small city. anyone else think the thing inside the mothership's dome looked like a city? of course that may just be the quality of the video.
