I didn't like the movie, at least, as it present itself, for the same reason that all those pictures are funny: in the movie itself they were saying all of that stuff seriously. I mean, I spent more time laughing at the straight-faced absurdity of their cheesy lines than I did appreciating the "epic nature" of the story. I don't think that's what they were going for.
On a slightly funny side-note, I actually watched this movie with my mom (get in free, can't complain). Picture this: I am giggling hysterically as scenes of nasty mutant-sex, death, decapitation, and other forms of ultraviolence flash across my face, with my mother at my side. It doesn't get any weirder, or more awkward than that.

i thought the movie kinda sucked hard. maybe even worse than troy did... they definetly shouldnt have made everything CGI cause it gets annoying to watch. The story wasnt put together well. i dont know why everybody kept telling me it was great and to go watch it. my all time favorite greek/roman type war movies will be first... GLADIATOR (f*cking kick ass movie with a decent plot and second........ SPARTACUS (no need to explain just all around had that good feeling). is it a rule that the main character/hero inall these movies must die?
Fenix

Heh, yeah, the battle scenes were like a bad roller coaster....Going fast and the *JIONK!!* all jerky and slow. It could have been twice as good if they only slo-moed every other brutal sword slash, and better if then only did it once in a while. And the end was lame....Leonidas sooo coulda killed that guy.
EDIT: And yes, they have to die, otherwise it isn't SPARTAAA!!

I thought 300's action scenes were great, but the plot was lame and dry and the acting was WAY overdone. A movie can't survive on action alone. So overall the movie was, unfortunately, very bad.

Well, technically, this plot ACTUALLY happened in history although, 300 being based on the graphic novel, it was obviously exaggerated, so you can't really gripe with the plot too much.

I sure as hell can gripe, the plot was dry. As a filmmaker, it's your duty to spice it up enough to make a decent, engulfing movie, while keeping to the original storyline as much as possible. Other than action, that movie had nothing. Now, I may be no Lenard Maltin, but I think I can recognize a lacking plot when I see one.
But, that's just my opinion. Everyone else I know thought it was one of the greatest movies ever.
It's a great movie. I really loved it.

08-10-2007, 08:24 AM
I loved this movie, despite its historical inaccuracies. Pure action, not a single dull moment. Plot was terrible, but I didn't expect it to be all that great anyways. It was simply a fun movie with a ton of kickass battle scenes.
I went to this movie with three Asian friends of mine, all of whom have that whole "Asians are superior to White men" complex. It's an inside joke between us, inspired by the media portrayal of Asians, and they aren't really serious about it.
At any rate, everytime they start off on a tangent about the superior Asian man, I simply bring up the whole "All the hordes of Asia were held back by 300 Spartans thing." They quickly drop it.

the mario one is priceless...
Being Persian, I thought the movie was good, but I couldn't help but feel annoyed every time they demonized the Persians...yeah, I know it's ancient history, but Persian Pride is a big thing amongst us, and we don't take kindly to any sort of criticism of our heritage.
I was EXTREMELY disappointed at the portrayal of the Persian higher-ups, with all the piercings and dainty accoutrement. Xerxes was the single gayest king I have ever seen...lip gloss? Eye shadow? He was wearing more makeup than all the members of Kiss put together ffs. I mean granted, he was an idiot (it was under his command that the Persian navy moved into the Bay of Salamis - Xerxes: "Hmmm the Greek navy is hiding in a small bay with cliffs on all sides....what should I do??? I got it! Send in my entire navy all at once!! *sends navy into the bay* Greek catapaults: Hi. I'm a catapault. *ownage ensues* Xerxes" Ohhhh fiddlesticks!), but one thing alone makes that portrayal crazily inaccurate...he had no hair! Have you ever seen a typical Persian guy? We buy shaving cream by the keg!
nikzad the story is told from the perspective of that guy with one eye.
so its all out of proportion anyways. He wasnt even around for the end battle

There are many inaccurates in 300, but its hollywood they had to make it entertaining.
One thing that annoys me though is when people think they know everything about a event in history after they watched a movie of it.
It wasn't 300 that defended against the entire army of the persians on that narrow passage, it started out as a few thousand, can't remember the exact number though, and it was only 300 when they were retreating when the Perisans found a back route, so the army retreated but those 300 stood behind to cover them while they retreated. Most of the battle consisted of thouse thousand+ men, and only toward the end when they retreated was there 300.
Also I beleive Leondius actually died in the battle and they displayed his head to decrease morale or something. not sure of the exact details though.
Then, the spartans had superior technology compared to the persians, they had wicker shields and their light armor and shields were easily peirced by the superior spartan weaponary that was a more high quality metal, etc.

Actually it wasn't even down to 300 for the final battle, more like 1000. There were the 300 Spartans with Leonidus and 700 Thespians. Just checked the wonderful and most accurate source in the world Wikipedia to double check my numbers and the article there also mentions 900 Helots, Spartan Serfs.
Also, the lack of body armor amongst the Spartans was inaccurate. They should have had heavy bronze breastplates. Also the tactics they used in the movie were a bit off. At first they used the famous phalanx but that quickly disolved. The Greek armies were to disciplined to break their protective formation so easily.
But it is just a movie and as stated by others was based on a graphic novel. Its best to ignore the inaccuracies and enjoy the bad ass Spartans kicking ass and taking names.

Yea, its just that it annoys me when people that saw the movie think they know everything about that event in history just because they saw the movie, not saying anyone here is like that.
Also I agree about Xerxes, the first time I saw him I couldn't stop laughing, he came off as soooo cliche and sterotypical.

i think that that was the point
whats the MOST you could do to make a bad guy appear bad.
its a hollywood adaption of a very simplfied/exagerated comic by frank miller.
the spartans are big men, the essence of macho, whislt the persians indulge in all kinds of decedance, one of them has the head of a goat.

300 sucked, sin city was way better. 300 is overrated and has too much plot. I thought it was going to be an over the top rediculous movie full of action like Escape from L.A. but it wasnt it took itself seriously, way to seriously. The otherthing is there were no memorable parts of the movie to think about when you leave the theater. Most movies have an exciting part elevated above the rest for example the fight between luke and vader in RotJ or when the felbeast gets its head cut off in LotR. In 300 all the action is at that level so it gets boring. A guy gets its head cut off and your like "holy ****! that guy got his ****ing head clean sliced off" by the third time its not special, you dont give a **** anymore you dont leave the film saying "remember when the guy got his head cut off" because it happend so much. The same thing goes for slow-motion action, they over did it. In the Matrix they had a few parts with slow motinon like the lobby-scene, and it worked. 300 didnt have any "scenes" it was one long fight, Oh wait no it wasn't, thats what we were promised, instead a great portion of the movie is self righteous bull**** speeches by Leonidus and his wife.
ShdwyTemplar
08-23-2007, 12:50 AM
You can't compare Sin City, The Matrix Trilogy, and 300. Thats 3 freaking genres of movies... Thats just ridiculous and head chopping is something thats memorable to anyone I would presume.. Anyways its a movie based off a comic based off of history so please just deal with it. Your taking the qualities most movies repeat and laying them as the grounds for "It sucked" not a good argument. Well, if you expected it to be only fights then it might as well have been a Made for TV Movie. A Story is only as good as the background portrayed in it. Therefore all the talks are their for a reason. It provide a spot of rest and spot of background to a mixture of Fight Fight Fight Speech Fight Fight Fight Speech, ect. Overall it's a good movie imo and you can't disclaim it with those arguments unless you disclaim a large amount of other movies.
AdmiralAckbar
08-23-2007, 04:09 PM
300 had a boring plot, the only thing that wouldve compensated for the bad story would be good action. 300 is a MOVIE, thus can be compared to other MOVIEs.
I compared it to sin city only because it is also a based on a Frank miller comic, and is similar to 300, yet not as popular and overhyped despite being a better movie.
No-one born after 300s release will know about or see 300, it was a bad and forgettable movie.

well... the laws of economics give the final word

I know I'm n00b but I just watched it. For the first time. I was annoyed to see all the backgrounds done with computers and thus highlighting the irregularities of lighting between that and the characters, very poor work. But maybe it was meant to be like that, I don't know. I liked the plot regardless of its inaccuracies and I found Xerxes to be like a mean gay overlord. I didn't like the gay bit.
Final verdict: not a must-see, more like a nothing-left-to-watch category.
ps why are there so many parodies of this movie? Is it to express that it was terrible and should be made fun of?
Fenix

It's because it was so amazingly over the top in every aspect.
EonMaster
10-25-2007, 12:17 AM
The only issue I have with the movie is the movie doesn't show the discipline the Spartan army had. It looks more like they are mindless killers. The phalanx would not have dissipated after the first wave of enemies hit. They would also not go into battle and break away from the phalanx to attack by thenselves.
Over all, the movie was great and a must see for those who like action films.
