Holy **** what an awesome game. Mix a RTS and a FPS but keep the emphasis on RTS and that is World in Conflict. The camera is controlled by wasd and the mouse much like in a FPS. You can join games that have already started at any time and the server setup is just like that of a FPS.
There is no basebuilding and no mining resources (this would not make sense in the game because you are fighting on a semi modern (late 1980s - early 1990s) battlefield as either the USSR, NATO, or the US. Instead you get reinforcement points (sort of like in some FPS games like the Battlefield series) which you use to buy units. There are four different roles to go which are air, support, armor, and infantry. These roles are more close to what different races would be in other RTS games as the US, NATO, and USSR are basically the same stat-wise.
I have most of the settings on low because while my computer is good, it's not extremely high end (more of the low end of high end computers) and it still look amazing.
Another great thing is tactical aid. Imagine having a ghost that instead of just being able to drop a nuke, it can call in air strikes from A-10 warthogs, cluster bomb strikes, fuel air bombs, carpet bombing runs, and even a tactical nuke. The fuel air bomb and daisy cutter are akin to the damage of the nuke in starcraft while the carpet bombing and tactical nuke are so much more damaging. And you dont need a unit to issue the tactical aid order, you just pick a place on the map and the wait time for it is about 10-15 seconds.
