As a note, in internet-land, when you say "Civil War" you should specify "American Civil War" because the Internet is an international structure, and there have been hundreds of civil wars in different countries.

The actual reason for the war was literally the reason the South put forward: they wanted independence from the North. the South had a completely different culture (agrarian vs the North's industrial) and felt like it was being pushed around by the North's policies. One of the things the south didn't like was the North's lower (but not as low as many would tell you) degree of acceptance for slavery. Southern leaders feared that the election of Lincoln would lead to him freeing the slaves, so upon his election, they decided to break away. We don't know if he would have done it without the war: the Emancipation Proclamation was mainly a strategic move to deny the South resources (which were produced by slaves) and men (although they never really were, the South could have used their slaves to increase their numbers.)

Racial discrimination stems from the propaganda plantation owners dished out to both the slaves and the poor white farmers that worked or competed with the slaves. These people had to be fed racism so that they would be hostile to slaves, people otherwise their economic equals, and never join up with them against the plantation owners. They ate it up, too, because the slaves had a distinctly different culture: being no more than a few generations from Africa, the slaves had a completely different appearance, different languages, and different practices that the poor white farmers could latch on to as a reason for their inferiority.

After the war, this problem only increased, since, without slaves, many more white farmers were now extremely poor. They used the white superiority card as self-justification that they deserve more in the world. Also, Southern supremacists, the ones that originally wanted the South to break away, adopted the white supremacist outlook, as it had ties with Southern history and appealed to the poor whites that would be easier to influence.

The worst racism in the U.S. stems from these circumstances. You'll notice that the strongest anti-black sentiments are still held in lower socioeconomic areas of the south, where it is a common fall-back. Of course, people don't stick to hating just blacks: the Ku Klux Klan gains its support from the same groups, and is known for openly hating anyone that is not a WASP(White Anglo-Saxon Protestant). Other racism, such as racism against Hispanics along the border with Mexico, and racism against whites (yes, it exists) also finds its strongest support in communities where people have less going for them. The strongest anti-Hispanic calls come from people who are in direct competition for the low-end jobs they typically take, and the worst anti-white sentiments come from urban slums, where poor blacks are often in direct competition with poor whites.

Racial discrimination is, and has always existed, as a release of frustration, because of socioeconomic tension and the fear of unfamiliar cultures.

Proctor: All right, here's your last question. What was the cause of
the Civil War?
Apu: Actually, there were numerous causes. Aside from the obvious
schism between the abolitionists and the anti-abolitionists,
there were economic factors, both domestic and inter--
Proctor: Wait, wait... just say slavery.
Apu: Slavery it is, sir.

No wait... that's what was the cause of the American Civil War, sorry. :P

World War II and the Vietnam War were both fought during the 20th Century and left very different impressions on Americans. Compare the two wars and how they affected life in the United States. How did Americans view each war? What are some of the similarities? What are some of the differences? How did the homefront perceive each war? What type of soldiers fought in each war? How did each war start?

Your assignment should be one full page, written in 12 pt font, single spaced, with one inch margins. Remember to write in complete sentences. Use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Remember that ALL work must be done in your own words.

wheres that report you guys are spost to write?

Why do you feel there was still so much racial discrimination after the Civil War? Explain.
Your answer should be at least 3 complete sentences long.

After the war the south no longer had its use of slaves and it took it out on them by treating them as inferior. That was just amplifyed due to lack of education on the black culture and way of life. they thought of them as inhuman and that is the way they treated them.

sound good? cause thats what i am submiting.
also
Which case did Brown v Board of Education overturn? How did this decision impact civil rights?
Your answer should be at least 3 complete sentences long.

The Brown v Board of Education overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson case which stated that seprate but equal facilitys were allowed. They said that if they are seperate they are not equal therefore unlawfull. This changed civil rights in the way that Blacks no longer had to go to separate schools, drink from seperate drinking fountains and such.

man im good.

Who was Cesar Chavez? How did his work influence civil rights?
Your answer should be at least 3 complete sentences long.

damn now i have to actualy read something :P

Cesar Chaves founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) and promoted civil libertys for other ethnic groups. he made a flag for his followers and said a symbol is a powerfull thing. He brought media attention to his cause and that helped.

This is very true..

What I would do if I was him, I would read what you wrote, understand it and then rewrite it with my own words.

It's a bit more trouble but it would look very legit.. and since he would understand it.. he would learn from it.

Well first of all im latin american, not american, but I guess i can still try to help with what I know. I think that during the WW2 the home front had a much more active role regarding volunteering to work in the war industry, things like assambling tanks, planes, munitions and such. I have the impression that during vietnam the production of war materials was lower, and was left to specialized companies and weapon industries (As a consequence of the cold war military complex [i think they call it that way]). I think the same goes with medics, nurses an all that. The civillian involvement was major in WW2.

About the visions the americans had of the war, during WWII an evident agression from the japanese sort of make americans have the same feeling about taking part on the war. During the Vietnam War, far more unjustified (I belive that it was started by the fake bombing of an american ship... or maybe that was korea? Sory I havnt studied the causes) There was not an unianimous opinion about the war. Althought the NATO was involved, it looked more like another solely-american intervention. Things like these kept the opinion divided and movements like the anti war pacifists were born. The war was never popular. WWII was sort of more like a "pure and noble" cause, though also that can be discussed.

About the racism questions, you should remember that although we repudiate the nazis racism, americans were an extremely racist people even long after the nazis were defeated. Of course they didnt take black people to death camps, but you get the picture. It has sort of hypocrite.
Even these days there are extremeley large amounts of racist americans, but i personally think that america is sort of in debt with the black peoiple for all those years of slavery, but thats just my view.

Well thats just what i THINK, not what i KNOW.
