The only problems I have had being behind a router are hosting. I opened a few ports on the router and forwarded them to the comp I was playing SC on and all is well!

Forward Ports: 6113-6119, 4000, & 27960.

I can't speak from experience on lag problems with DSL as I have cable but I hope this helps someone out there. :good:

For a long time I had a lot of trouble hosting, but I eventually found out that logging off battle.net, then logging back on buys me a window of clean hosting. It's kind of funny: when I had dialup, I never had any trouble with battle.net, I just had slow downloads and uploads (never in-game lag). With DSL, my DL/UL improved, but with a storm of connection issues in their wake.

I was wondering, I have NAT for the network at my house and my father doesn't want me to forward the necessary ports for Battle.net because he sees it as too much of a security risk, which I understand that it could possibly be. What other ways can I go about this issue. I currently run off a router which goes through to a hub to another 3 comps that share it. It is DSL from bell south and my router is Netopia. I heard that by buying a separate ip address for my computer could do the trick. Anyone have any advice?

Na, there are like 7 ports...I am in the process of handling it, but right now it's not to big of an issue because I am re-playing single player SC and Brood War all over again. Once I am done with that, then there will be some problems.

i dont know why there are all these problems with hosting. i used to be able to host, then i stopped playing for a few years and when i came back i couldnt. and, it has nothing to do with firewalls. i have my firewall on, i cant host. i take it off i cant host. i reboot my internet, i cant host.

some external reasons that i think could hav lead to hosting difficulties:
-new patch problems
-starcraft servers' inefficiencies, probably due to starcraft2 coming out so they've lost workforce on the starcraft servers or something (ive heard quite a few other people who have been having lagging problems lately too, but not the majority so im probably wrong)

wooo. after playing diablo again then getting bored of it, again, i decided to come back to sc. i'm Originx on useast. I'm ready to play some non money maps. one i like is boxer, which is in the sc1 normal folder and it's pretty fun becuase it's basicly just a very even map, so many things are viable.

My race is Zerg at the moment. I was just playing some games against the CPU, and I have come to the conclusion that I am in pretty bad shape. Maybe some more practice is needed. Any suggestions for that besides reading the whole starcraft compendium? :P

A few people here can confirm that I'm far from being a good player but my suggestions are:
aim for ~20 workers on minerals, 3 on gas
learn the hotkeys - you don't need to learn all of them, but the ones you use regularly
have a basic skeleton of how you will build up your groups - I usually go like this [0-nexus, 1-6-gateway, 7-9-robo/stargate] - obviously for Zerg it is Hatchery all the way so you could create unit groups as well which I'm not fond of because they get killed and I have to memorise every time I create a new group
scout and decide whether to take the initiative or follow your opponent - either way, you should have fixed strategies with fixed combinations of units, like a) DT+Corsair, b) Dragoon+HT, etc. for Protoss
know roughly which units excel in certain situations (e.g., Hydra is not a good choice against HT)

These are only my observations combined with my opinion, but I think I made the concept clear.

im East coast, gmt -5 (5 hours behind london) and usually play from 8:30-10:30 with a friend named dr_mel25. we look for 2v2 games. we would love to be invited and play one.
