alright heres a hard puzzle for 300 minerals and 2x

its all math so be ready

there is a crazy guy who likes to open doors
so the asylum puts him in a room with 100 doors
the man starting on door 1 opens all the doors (1-100)
then he comes back to door 1 and closes every 2nd door (2, 4,6...)
then he comes back to door 1 and opens/closes every 3rd door (3,6,9...)
now say this continues for 100 rounds

how many doors are left open?
what are the door numbers of the opened doors?

hehe that should keep u guys busy
and i de-googlized it so it wont show up
same rules as always no edits no google first correct post wins

also my other riddle is still unsolved.

PowerkickasS

opened numbers:
every odd number except ones which are multiples of 3, and all even numbers which are multiples of 3

wrong power kickass i think you are assuming that this only happens 3 times like i displayed thru examples but he also opens every 4th door every 5th door,...... all the way to every 99th door then every 100th door.

oh and 1 more puzzle

a man flips a coin an infinate number of times,
what is the chance that during his flips that there is an equal amount of heads and tails?
assuming an exact 50% heads 50% tails probability

also more math this one will get you 50 minerals.

I think i solved it, but I'm not too sure...There should be 10 doors left open and they should be Doors 1, Door 4, Door 9, Door 16, Door 25, Door 36, Door 49, Door 64, Door 81, and Door 100 because everytime he starts over, all those doors that he closes he reopens. Like for example when he is doing the 2x Doors, he closes 2,4,6 etc. but then when he does 4x, since its been closed from 2x he opens its back up. Same thing with when he does it 3x, he closes the door 9 but reopens it when he does 9x etc. etc.

This is a very easy one, 1st member correct gets a power up
In a horse race, you just overtook the 2nd horse, what place are you in now?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This next one is slightly harder, 1st member correct gets 500 minerals

In a 100 meters sprint, runners A, B and C started at the same time.
Runner B arrived at the 90m mark when runner A arrived at the 100m mark.
Runner C arrived at the 90m mark when runner B arrived at the 100m mark.
Where was runner C when runner A arrived at the 100m mark?

FlyingTiger
07-25-2007, 02:12 PM
Runner C was at the 81 m mark.

Let's say A ran 100 meters in 10 seconds... so A ran 10 m/s. This meant B ran it in 9 m/s or 90%. C ran it at 90% of B. So C ran it at 8.1 m/s thus 81 m. <--- Easier for me to visualize... I mean you don't need to convert it to speed. ^_^

Hint 1: Each letter has to do with a word. (i.e. each letter represents the 2nd letter in each word)

I think I know how to do it xD (probably not correct though)

the trick?: for each number from 1-100 determine the amount of numbers it can be divided by and if it's uneven then it's open (e.g 42: 3 14 6 7 2 21 42 1 -> 8numbers so it's not open) so 16 is open (1 16 2 8 4)

can't be bothered to go all the way with this alexei

700 minerals and 2x  for the correct answer.

josh
07-26-2007, 07:28 AM
okay since i now have enough minerals for prizes, here's my puzzle for all of you to answer.

this is for 750 minerals and a

during a war, 3 men were captured by enemy soldiers. they were gagged and brought to their hideout. the captain of the platoon wishes to test the three men of their intelligence, so, he ordered his soldiers to tie and blindfold each of them up on chairs. once done, they alligned and made to face one direction and took off their blindfolds. here's how they look:

    h          h          h
  guy 1    guy 2    guy 3

take note that those guys are facing this way ------>

oh yeah. the "h" stands for their chairs.

when they have done this, the captain showed the three men 5 hats, 3 of which is white and 2 is black. he told them that he's gonna place 1 hat of random color on each of their heads and they would try to guess what color of the hat they're wearing within 1 minute. any one of them may answer, but if they answered incorrectly, moved a bit, talk or ran out of time, they will be shot. so they were once again blindfolded and he began putting hats on each of their heads. when the blindfold was removed, the soldiers took aim on them preparing to fire once an error occurred.

after 59 seconds of sitting quitely, the man in front (that's guy 3) answered. the captain was astonished because he got the right answer so they were set free.

what was the color of the hat of the man in front and EXPLAIN how he got that answer.

okay rules are:

1. the answer of the color and full and clear explanations is required.
2. first one to answer correctly wins
3. no edits
4. okay here's the tricky part. i will provide 3 hints for those who will ask for it but i will deduct 50 minerals per hint given. also, if you wish for me to answer the right color for you to just explain why, i will deduct 100 minerals. well, that goes for everyone.

let the game begin!

oh yeah one more thing, this will not involve math, just logical and deductive reasoning.

tweakismyname
07-26-2007, 07:49 AM
ok guy 1 see the guys ahead and because he doesent speak up we atomaticly know that 2 and 3 are not both wearing black hats otherwize 1 would speak up therfore at least one of the hats is white, guy 2 knowing this he must know that if guy 3's hat is black then his must be white, but he also does not speak up, therefore guy 3 automaticly knows his hat is white.

ive done this one before.

hehe took a while to remember the logic tho.

wuffle
07-26-2007, 08:00 AM
His hat was white. All of their hats were white. He figured this out since the captain's wording could be taken to mean that they all got the same color. Since they all have to be the same color, it couldn't be black since their are only 2 black hats.

EDit: WOW tweak! Nice logic.

josh
07-26-2007, 08:01 AM

Coin one: 99.9...%

FlyingTiger
07-26-2007, 01:13 PM
dude I don't think you can do the coin problem with simple math. All I can think of is using probabilities theories when I took stats class in high school. I really think the problem involves more than just a percentage. There is really no exact answer. I mean if you think about it, the only way you can get an equal number of heads and tails is an infinite number of flips.

If you want a percentage, it has to be based on a number of flips. There is no way you can calculate an exact percentage for an infinite number of flips unless its an equation based on the number of flips. It just doesn't make any sense. I would love to see how you calculated that percentage.

I mean if you are talking about infinity, then it's 100%. Cause really, its infinity... it may take countless millenias to get to that point, but since I have infinite amount of flips, I get it somehow... ^_^

Peter.Hong
07-26-2007, 01:39 PM
a man flips a coin an infinate number of times,
what is the chance that during his flips that there is an equal amount of heads and tails?
assuming an exact 50% heads 50% tails probability

The chances are between 99 and 100 because the odds are not determined by previous coin flips. No matter how many times you flip a coin on the next flip the odds will stil be 50/50. However, probability shows us that the more number of times you flip a coin the closer you will get to this odds of 50/50. For example lets say 3 out of 4 flips are tails. So you have 25/75 however if on the next flip you get heads then it changes the odds to 40/60. And etc. So even though you will end up somewhere very very very close to 50/50 you will never really reach that probability even doing it an infinite amount of times. So you would end up with 99.999999999 repeating. This is going all by logic and the definition of probability so it may not be the answer you're looking for.

PowerkickasS

In a horse race, you just overtook the 2nd horse, what place are you in now?"
ur in second place.

tweakismyname
07-26-2007, 07:07 PM
mabey im saying it wrong.

ok after first 2 flips probability is 50% right?
but if you dont get those you have 2 coins with either heads or tails making after 2 more flips your percentage goes to 62.5 because you have to reduce the percentage (25%)by the percentage you already have(50%), but then after the next two flips, there is a 1/6 chance which is 13.33333 percent chance which you also have to reduce by 62.5% making it about an aditional   5. somethin or another % so you are up to 67.5% but there is still more left to the equation more problems, but as you can see the added percents are decreasing at a decreaseing rate (desent seem like it at the start but it will... thats cause you are only losing 50% make sense?)which is easily graphable if you know how. so just figure out the rest.

i leave it up to you. that is hint 1.

what is the answer? mabey if you explain how you got your answer unlike all the other peops u will get it right.

by the way that really makes it ez doesent it? you only have to do 3 more probs to get the correct answer. so im lowing it to 400 minerals and 2x powerup.

disaree with my logic? prove it for 400 minerals.

Nikzad

tweakismyname
07-26-2007, 07:14 PM
it gets ezer all the time. trust me. just dont think about it too hard or you can confuse yourself.

PowerkickasS
07-26-2007, 07:15 PM
tweak, are you trying to say that the probabilities of the coins based on the sampled flips aren't independent....? tweak seems to be becoming rather experimental and off on his own world now....=/

EDIT: or he is confusing himself with the odd possibilities of the coins losing probability to rematch back to equal numbers of heads and tails because of doubles, which is very subjective to luck of sampling and thus is rather impossible to determine an infinity let alone remaining in the boundary of the laws of probability -_-

tweakismyname
07-26-2007, 07:36 PM
im saying yes they are not independent and can be solved thru this simple problem :

Toss the coin once, assign the value +1 to the side that shows (if heads comes up heads=+1 and tails=-1). Now toss the coin a second time.

The total will either be +2 or 0 with a probability of 1/2 that it is +2 and a probability of 1/2 that it is 0.

I use P(+x) to represent the probability that we will eventually get to a count of 0 starting with a count of +x.

So, after two tosses

(1) P = 1/2 + P(+2)

To solve for P(+2) we must toss the coin two more times and we will end up with +4 with a probability of (1/4), +2 with a probability of (1/2) and 0 with a probability of (1/4).

(2) P(+2) = (1/4)P(+4) + (1/2)P(+2) + (1/4)
(3) P(+2) = 1/2 + (1/2)P(+4)

Substitution back into the equation (1)

(4) P = 3/4 + (1/4)P(+4)

Toss the coin two more times and get +6 or +4 or +2 with probabilities 1/4, 1/2, 1/4.

(5) P(+4) = 1/4)P(+6) + (1/2)P(+4) + (1/4)P(+2)

Solve for P(+4) and we get

(6) P(+4) = (1/3) + (2/3)P(+6)

Substitute (6) back into (4) and you get

(7) P = 5/6 + (1/6)P(+6)

Now for a leap, I assert that:

(8 ) P(+n) = 1/((n/2) + 1) + (n/2)/((n/2) + 1)P(+(n+2))
and

(9) P = (n-1)/n + (1/n)P(+n)
for any even n

does that help? :P lol  ??? ??? ???

(muahahahah im soooo cunfusing!)

wuffle
07-26-2007, 11:04 PM
According to your equation the probablity would be 99.9 repeating percent chance since (n-1)/n+(anything positive) will never be equal to, but will get very close to, 1. Sorry I didn't explain before; I didn't know we had to.

tweakismyname

no tweak... when i said

"because 3 times 7 is 21 ... close ... and 3/7 times 7 equals 3  put it together... 21 and 3 is 24"

i was just explaining how i did it, notice it says put it together, as in the two parts of the equation...i know there are 3 sevens in there but I used the correct number in my answer which does equal 24

obviously if you have 3x7 and (3/7)x7  you can combine it into (3/7+3)x7 which equals 24 and has the right number of numbers      what is wrong?

do you want more parentheses?  like    ((3/7)+3)7=24    better?

hmm mabey i should start figureing out the answer to my puzzles before i post em.

e=? l=? f=? o=?

Gah345
07-27-2007, 05:19 AM
if you follow the order of operations, the first 3 would be divided by 7 before the other 3 was added to that.

but i will admit they did make it more understandable

OOOOOO ive done that ELF one before!!!!!

Gah345
07-27-2007, 05:26 AM
Well two numbers of three digits can only make a four digit number below 2000 so the F must equal 1

If F is 1 then L must be 2 because F + F = L  (1+1=2)

then L + L = O so O = 4  (2 + 2 = 4)

finally 1442 divided by 2 is 721 thus E = 7

E=7  L=2  F=1 O=4

ur evil gah! fine take all my money!

heres one you wont get!

for 500 minerals:
13 dudes have this chest that contains a stack of dirty magazines (lol) now you see they want to set it up so that if the majoraty wants to see them they can but if its only a minoraty they wont be able to.
so they get this lockmaker and he puts a certain amount of locks on the chest. and each of the horny dudes gets a certain amount of keys: the question is what is the minimum amount of locks on the chest and the minimum amount of keys each horney dude needs to carry if any majoraty (7) of them want to open it?

hehe that will stump u also you get 2x

for an extra 500 minerals label the keys that each dude has (a, b , c....)

rules: no edits, no google, (but can u tell i de-googleized it?) and first to post correct wins, both for part one and part two

So I looked up that coin puzzle tweak gave and here's the real solution:

Given a coin with probability p of landing on heads after a flip, what is the probability that the number of heads will ever equal the number of tails assuming an infinite number of flips?

Think of this problem instead as one of a random walk along a number line. Let 0 be the starting point, p be the probability of moving to the right, and q be the probability of moving to the left.
Let B=probability of ever moving one to the left from where you are.

Let A=probability of revisiting current square from the right.

B = q + Aq + A2q + A3q + ... = q/(1-A).

A=pB --> B=A/p --> B=A/(1-q).

q/(1-A) = A/(1-q) --> A=q,1-q.

However, A must be less than or equal to both p and q, thus the reasonable solution is A=min(q,1-q).

Redo the above only reverse the words left and right and A will still equal min(q,1-q). One ramification of this is that the probability of revisiting 0 is the same from both the left as the right. This stands to reason since any path has a mirror image on the other side of equal probability. So the answer is 2*min(q,1-q).

Below are the results of computer trials which have verified the answer above. For each probability p 100,000 trials were conducted, in which a trial ended when either the number of heads equalled the number of tails, or the difference was more than 25. It seems reasonable to assume that for p<=.4 if the difference ever equals 25 it is very unlikely that the gap ever be closed. A 'win' means the number of heads was ever equal to the number of tails. The number of losses would be 100,000 minus the number of wins.

p wins
----- ------
0.4 80058
0.3 59799
0.2 39957
0.1 19803

LOL yea I knew there was not a definitive percent answer.

Tweak im askin my "good at math friend" maybe he can help me with you chest with locks and 13 guys with keys riddle, thats not against the rules is it?
i think it is combinations
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think ive got it TWEAK!!!! muaahahahhaa
I used combinations and factorials that i learned this year(which have very few uses apart from this!!)

Locks on the chest =   1716    =   13C7

Keys per guy =   924    =   (1716x7)/13    or  12C6  = 924

i did some mini examples like a chest with only three people ,  the chest had 3 locks and the guys had 2 keys each
and then i upped it to 5 people with a jump up to 10 locks and 6 keys per person.

You know that the majority is 7 so you want to find every COMBINATION of 7 out of 13  and assign the members of that group the key type that corresponds with 1 lock. That way if u have less than 7 in your group, say u have 6 then they are missing the key needed that is held by all 7 who are NOT there. (since each group of 7 has a needed key type) There are 1716 combinations of 7 in 13 thus there are 1716 locks

if there are 1716 locks and each lock has 7 keys, thats 12012 keys total divided by 13 people is 924!!!!!

TADAAAAAAA!!!!!

theres no way ur gonna get me to label 12012 keys!!!

DaygoWop

I guess it is my turn to give a riddle. I did figure out the last 2...

okay, a  and 100 minerals...

You walk up to a mountain that has two paths. One leads to the other side of the mountain, and the other
will get you lost forever. Two twins know the path that leads to the other side. You can ask them only one question. Except! One lies and one tells the truth, and you don't know which is which.
So, What do you ask?

EDIT: same rules! no google especially! Also, I want to hear your reasoning...

MarineCorp
08-07-2007, 04:18 PM
I think this is a trick question,

i am going to say the twin which is 'One leads to the other side of the mountain' will be the one i will ask??? because you know
2 paths = 2 twins

Hadean
08-07-2007, 05:41 PM
You ask either twin which direction the other twin would tell you to go. And then go in the opposite direction. Boom.

*edit* Oh explanation?

Well I already know the riddle for one, but it goes like this see. If you ask the twin who lies which direction the honest one would tell you to go, he'll tell you the opposite. So you take the path he didnt tell to take and you'll be going on the right path. Same goes for the honest one, he'll tell you what the liar would say which is the wrong path, so if you do the opposite of that path, you'll also get the correct one.

Happy?

Nikzad
08-07-2007, 05:47 PM
You ask either twin which direction the other twin would tell you to go, so the one who lies would say the opposite of what the honest one would say (the path to death) and the honest one will tell the truth and corroborate the liar's answer...Hadean you didn't give reasoning! BWAHAHAHAHA GIVE ME THE MINERALS

Hadean
08-07-2007, 05:49 PM

hillzagold
08-07-2007, 10:46 PM
unless you gave us the option of having them all false, the answer would be 1. if any of the other 9 were true, then every statement before that would also be true, so the only way to have just one true is for 1 to be true.

ah, my mistake, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are true, with the following statements being false

I do not know where family doctors acquired illegibly perplexing handwriting; nevertheless, extraordinary pharmaceutical intellectuality, counterbalancing indecipherability, transcendentalizes intercommunications' incomprehensibleness.

its peculiar because its just using big words to say that doctors have bad handwriting, despite their medical genius.

like silly riddles? heres one for you! only 150 minerals cause this one is preaty common riddle

hillzagold
08-09-2007, 04:22 AM
second one,

0/4 and 0/7 to start
start, 4/4 and 4/7 after 4
flip 4, 0/4 and 4/7
3/4 and 7/7 after 3
flip, 1/4 and 0/7
4/4 and 3/7 after 3
flip 7, 4/4 and 4/7
4/4 and 7/7 after 3
3+3+3=9

tweakismyname
08-09-2007, 04:28 AM
second one,

0/4 and 0/7 to start
start, 4/4 and 4/7 after 4
flip, 0/4 and 3/7
3/4 and 6/7 after 3
flip 7, 3/4 and 1/7
4/4 and 7/7 after 6
3+6=9 minutes

uh rethink that, eather you typed it up wrong or you did the math wrong because that does not make sense

hillzagold
08-09-2007, 04:38 AM
yeah, i noticed, my edit adds up to 9 though

LordKerwyn
08-09-2007, 04:43 AM
start both glasses when the 4 minute one is doen re flip it when the 7 minute one is done there is one minute left on the 4 minute after the minute flip over the 4 minute again when that is done it will have 9 minutes from when the 7 minute glass ended.

tweakismyname
08-09-2007, 04:44 AM
3/4 and 7/7 after 3
flip, 1/4 and 0/7

how does 3/4 spontaniously change to 1/4?

wrong again

-edit- [quote]start both glasses when the 4 minute one is doen re flip it when the 7 minute one is done there is one minute left on the 4 minute after the minute flip over the 4 minute again when that is done it will have 9 minutes from when the 7 minute glass ended. [/qoute]
4 minutes + 4 minutes + 4 minutes. thats 12 minutes, rething what you typed if you flip over the 4 minute one 3 times when its dont that makes 12 lol

LordKerwyn
08-09-2007, 04:47 AM
not 4 + 4 + 4. 1 + 4 + 4 is what i said there is only 1 minute left on the 4 minute glass when the 7 minute one ends and all you have to do is after that one minute is done just flip the 4 minute one 2 more times like i said in the orignal post. I know my grammar sucked on my original pst but is what it was suoppose to say.

tweakismyname
08-09-2007, 04:52 AM
@lordkerwyn
actualy if you start mesuring time after the 7 minute goes out it would be a way to measure 9 minutes but thats tooo many flips, say you gotta measure it quick. like when you flip over the first hourglass.

not the answer im looking for but because it could work i will award you 100 minerals

hillzagold
08-09-2007, 04:53 AM
when i use a fraction, it refers to how much is on the bottom. 3/4 on bottom means 1/4 on top. flip it over and you have 1/4 on bottom with 3/4 on top

tweakismyname
08-09-2007, 04:57 AM
@hillzagold
hmm urs makes the same sense as lord kerwyns and because i didnt clarafy ill give you 100 minerals also.

but from now on i want the answer to be mesurable from the time you flip the first hourglass for full award.

LordKerwyn
08-09-2007, 05:01 AM
start both glasses when the 4 is done flip it ( 4 minutes in) and when the 7 is done flip ( 7 minutes in) and when the second flip on the 4 finishes 1 minute (8 minutes in) later reflip the 7 which only have 1 minute to put back (9 minutes) 4 + 4+ 1 = 9

tweakismyname
08-09-2007, 05:02 AM
there you go lordkerwyn

now you got it.

LordKerwyn
08-09-2007, 05:03 AM

Wow i thouht i might have been to late now to work on the word one.

Is facetiously the word?

tweakismyname
08-09-2007, 05:11 AM
what does that word mean?

LordKerwyn
08-09-2007, 05:13 AM
it means someone is speaking sarcrasticly ex. I loooovvvvvveeeeee speaking facetiously.

Hadean
08-09-2007, 05:13 AM
if it'll get me points. It's essentially the adverb of being frivolous, or joking / playful. Understand?

LordKerwyn
08-09-2007, 05:17 AM
I think hadean has a better definition but either way it ultimatly means being sarcastic

tweakismyname
08-09-2007, 05:19 AM
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

i think somebodys cheating,

besides that is not what it means lordkarwyn
THEREFORE because you dont even know what the word means im accusing you of google.

sooooooooooooo  points deducted by 1/2 because i have no proof.

*edit* it does not mean sarcastic at all.

LordKerwyn
08-09-2007, 05:23 AM
thats fine i got a friend that loves bigger words and that is one of hie more common words either way i just wanted credit for finding it hadean can have the other half of the minerals if his definition is correct.

BTW sarcastic is a synonym for one of the definitions of facetious. (i just looked it up on dictionary.com)

tweakismyname
08-09-2007, 05:45 AM
all right i guess you may be right but that doesent mean much only if it shows on the main page is it a true synonym it have like 50 different ones if you go to thesaurus

if you look mickey mouse is also a synonym.
oh and also einstien
just because its a synonym doesent mean its a defenition, i asked for definition.

LordKerwyn
08-09-2007, 05:51 AM
Ok i see where your coming from. Like i said earlier i didnt really care about the minerals for this one. Credit ftw lol

MarineCorp

Ferociously- something horrible/ scary

i can't think of anything else since LordKerwyn said 'Facetiously'

Hadean
08-09-2007, 03:16 PM
Jesus tweak, just take it as it is man. And the dictionary is completely ****ing based off of using synonyms to give a definition. But if you need a better def, then like is aid before. Being facetious is another means to say joke or not serious, facetiously can be used to explain that you werent serious about something, you were joking.

So you could say "Wow, you actually fought a dinosaur?" "I was being facetious you idiot." or "How come you said Starcraft two was gonna suck nuts?" "I was speaking facetiously."
