Their lifestyle doesnt seem healthy to me. Not their fault, too much people per square meter.
FlyingTiger
08-01-2007, 06:52 PM
what do u mean lifestyle isn't too healthy? I mean every country with big cities have too many people per square inch like Japan. These people do live the longest too because of their lifestyle and diet. The only flaw notable in Korea is their political instability at times.

omg i love dac biet
or at least that's what I think it is called...the beef soup...you eat with the spicy sauce and the sweet (plum?) sauce and it's got basil and bean sprouts and rice noodles omfg I made myself so hungry now
what are all those sauces made from?
edit: or is it dac bhiet....shoot, I gotta go back to Le's at my nearby mall and have some more, i don't care if it's 85 and humid, I need hot soup
FlyingTiger
08-01-2007, 08:36 PM
It's Pho!!!
Dac biet means "special"
so you prolly had the special version of pho which is pho but with almost everything. There is the xe lua (train) which has completely everything. Yes it is beef noodle soup and you eat it with the spicy red chili sauce and the hoison (yea plumb might be close enough) sauce. I don't really like basil but bean sprouts are alright.
yea Pho is the bomb lol. I have a t-shirt that says "What The Pho?" (Pho is pronounced with a more emphasis on the "h" than the "o" so it's like saying **** without the "ck")

Huh, I’m glad you showed the article. It's good that someone in the government had the sense to realize that we (america) are holding our own troops hostage there. Truth be told, if north Korea attacked south Korea, the only way to stop them would be nuclear weapons (there isn't a whole lot to keep the north Koreans out). It was known to be the worst tour of duty at one time (may still be).
So let's pray that doesn't happen.

@ FlyingTiger
ohhh you know what it is? on the menu, it's under a heading of pho, so I guess the word pho is inferred after the title of each dish. The restaurant I go to used to be called Pho Pasteur, but now it's called Le's
It's hard to convey the intricacies of pronunciation with text...I pronounce it as it would be in English: like the word "foe." Does it have an F sound at the beginning? Is the "O" pronounced like the "O" in "dog?" or "Joe?" or is it like the "U" in "duck?"
There are a multitude of dishes of pho at the place, but the one I have is the one with brisket and rare roundeye and tripe in it...I dunno if it rings a bell with you or not...but it's so cool that when they bring you the bowl of soup and noodles and beef, the roundeye is just really thinly sliced and really rare - almost raw. But then the broth cooks it all the way through by the time you add the chili sauce (which I put like a table spoon in for a bowl the size of my head, maybe Le's is just really strong) and plum sauce and basil and bean sprouts and dip your spring rolls or vegetarian summer rolls in it omg yummmm
I need to work on my chopstick skills though.
oh yeah, and just so nobody can say we are off-topic:

yea Pho means beef noodle soup. yea I've been to Pho Pasteur twice in Boston, excellent place. My mom's pho is better and she is currently teaching me how to make it too ^_^. Pho is pronounced **** without the "ck."
I don't exactly like the chili sauce but I like the hoison sauce a lot more and I like everything in my pho. haha.

08-02-2007, 01:40 PM
i love to just throw everything in and mix it up and eat it and ahhhhhhh
it's like a kaleidoscope of flavor inside my mouth
ok no when you say "pho" does it have an abrupt stop like you are about to drop the f-bomb then your mom walks in, or is it drawn out? so is it "fu- " or "fuhhh"
FlyingTiger
08-02-2007, 01:47 PM
fuhhhh lol
Nikzad
08-02-2007, 01:58 PM
ok cool
I'm really intense about pronunciation, especially if I meet someone with a foreign name. I always ask them how they would pronounce it in their language, because I figure if I just call them by their name with an American English accent, it's not really their name. It's a very small thing, requiring little effort, to learn how to pronounce someone's name correctly, and I think that people deserve to be called by their real name and not something that people say because they are too lazy and ignorant to take the time to learn about their culture or language.
However, it depends on the name. I took me a few days to learn that the "X" in my friend Xiao's name was more like a very short "S", rather than an "S-H" sound. His wife's name, however, I will never be able to pronounce. Un-possible.
Asian languages are tough for me because although I speak a few languages, the character sets of the alphabets are totally different in many cases, and the intonations and some of the sounds are not present or not as integral in the mechanics of the languages I speak. It's really like being a baby all over again. ;D
FYI - Nikzad is pronounced like Nick-zawd. Except not with an excessive emphasis on the "W." The "A" is more like the "O" in "dog"
EDIT: Who likes bubble tea??
DontHate

bubble tea is alright, but i dont really like it that much. the bubbles are hard to eat :O.

anyone have any favorite flavors?

yea i know the lollicup ones. i like the mango flavor and the chocolate-coffea type flavor thing.
Nikzad
08-02-2007, 03:50 PM
I think so far, I like honey milk tea the best
lychee isn't bad either, although I've only had it once or twice and don't know what the real thing tastes like
anyone ever had durian? I had a durian shake once at the Vietnamese restaurant I talked about earlier and it was ok....apparently the real fruit smells like ****e; either people love it, or they hate it
Pho is the bomb, but it's evil. It's a dark scheme to hook every Korean on it on first taste so the Vietnamese can just rule over them with little effort.
In recent years I've gotten hooked on the Vietnamese seafood noodle soup. I've ditched the beef variation pretty much altogether.

bubble tea is alright, but i dont really like it that much. the bubbles are hard to eat :O.
D00d, the FACT that they're hard to eat just makes it that much better. Gives you a reason to chew over and over that chewy goodness. I love bubble tea. It's like a food and a drink all in one. In Ann Arbor, MI you definitely get Asian central at Bubble Island. I feel so white-washed sometimes cuz I always go for the popcorn chicken, lol.

How many asians do we have on this site?? I would've guessed only like one or two before yesterday :P
FlyingTiger
08-02-2007, 07:43 PM
man I wish I was back in Ann Arbor. I'm applying to med school there but its gonna be a long shot cause its a great med school. Hopefully my in-state ties would keep me in for the running. Out of state applicants usually have a disadvantage for state schools.
There's prolly a lot more asians in this site than we all think.

I'm not Asian but I hang out with Asians at school
well unless you consider Iranian Asian
When I was a kid, on standardized tests, I always used to fill in "Asian" under the ethnicity because Iran is in Asia
But now I put "Other"
Itsmyship
08-02-2007, 08:05 PM
Hahaha! At least a good 60% of my friends and closest friends are asian in one way or another :P
Hehe, the only ethnicity that I could ever think of to put "other" under was Indian...other than that I couldn't think of one

FlyingTiger, do you currently reside in Michigan? Er where are ya if not? I'm currently in Texas now for the summer but am heading back to AA at the end of the month. I got hammered by Out of state tuition myself. Man am I gonna have a great time paying back loans after graduation :(
Oh, and back to topic: I'm full Chinese from Beijing. Came to the states when I was six. My gf 'n friends are actually mostly all white... dunno how that happened...
I'm Korean by blood, born in Seoul, Korea. But I went to Taiwan when I was three and grew up there, and came to the state when I was 13. So I'm also fluent in Mandarin Chinese as well as Korean, English is my third language. I dip my feet in all three cultures, Korean, Chinese, and American.
Taiwanese culture used to have the biggest influence on me but since I'm now 27 and have live over half of my entire life in the states, American culture is just as big. My family and most close friend are all Korean, so that one's always been major too.
I like the melting pot, lovely.

@Archlimit: No I live in CT now and go to UConn. I moved senior year of high school from Grand Rapids, MI (long long story) and I was gonna go to U of M too actually but my parents made me go to UConn cause it was a lot cheaper.
PS. I'm a HUGE Michigan fan and dislike people from Ohio especially those who go to tOSU. ^_^
@Millions: man I wish you good luck. I took it twice and getting my results on the 15th. Just remember to do tons of practice tests. The bio section will surprise you, the physical sciences will prolly be surprisingly easier and the verbal has long passages and sometimes vague questions. Hopefully the testing center is good for you cause my monitor was shifted to the left and they wouldn't let me get my minute back! Soooo pissed.
haha yea I dated white girls until now (I have an Indian gf hehe ^_^). I'm not a big fans of asian girls lol. They just remind me too much of my sisters ick. lol

What I love the most is Asian food. Especially Chinese food. I haven't try much of Korean or Japanese food though, I'm definitely going to try them out sometime. Nikzad is right! The Vietnamese beef soup noodles are delicious, once I had an addiction to them where I always wanted to go and have it. And Chinese food is probably one of the most delicious food I've ever tried, and It's nice to see how many different variety there are.
hey. wanna try filipino foods? lol.

i grew up on the border of Washington an Oregon. it rained a lot.
I've never tried Filipino food, but I really want to, I don't think I've ever seen a Filipino restaurant near where is live. I'll definitely try it if I can find one :)
Around where I live there's Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian and Singaporean reataurants. I've tried them all and I love them. My favourite is Thai because I like chilli. And lucky for me because I'm the only one in my family that doesn't have an allergy to MSG :)
oh? your family has allergy on MSG? how do that feel like?
if you want chili, you gotta try indian food. they're really unbearable!
okay, if you do wanna eat filipino food, try tasting "dinuguan" first. :D

it's hard to define "filipino" food... due to so many cultural influences, it's err... hard... think of it as amixture of native-american-japanese-koren-arabic food... then it comes out as a unique set... hehe...
our country profile seems slightly inaccurate though... i thought we export skilled people (bitter sarcasm...)... and i never knew our population was already at 85.xx million... woah...
