EDIT: I should probably clarify this isn't one of those games where it looks normal then has the scream and the face. It's a mystery/adventure game where you find clues and crap and it scared the f***ing hell out of me.

I will admit to you this... I got past the load screen. But as soon as the first image popped up, I turned it off. I'm not even gonna attempt to handle this game at this time of the night.

Exactly, it's that unsettling stuff that serious freaks me out. I can't stand the dead/afterlife/torture stuff. Most Hollywood creatures/monsters/SLASHERS/just about any type of horror movie doesn't phase me one bit. But movies like the Grudge, where it deals with like, the rage and torturous aspects of death 'n what not. Argh, I'm a *****.

you should really see saw Saw is just gore and violence, it's the abstract parts of horror that is scary, not the violent ones...

After all, we see violence all the time on TV, it kinda dulls our view of violence....

I really don't know why I watch so much horror movies /games... I have wild imagination and going to sleep after them can be damn hard... but even how much it scares I just go get new horror movie soon enough and watch it on dark...

Of course if you watch Horror movie you HAVE to watch it on night and ALONE...if you have friend who throws stupid comments it turns movie instantly from very scary to B-class gore comedy...

These are very rare thus far, need to get some good

Alone in the dark (played when I was little kid and it was quite scary)
Doom 3 (It's not so good but it has it's moments in night on first play time)

Doom 3 was AWESOME on second half, after you start to reveal truth about those archelogical findings it was just so damn exciting. It was quite repetive at middle part of game but it was very rewarding on end.

Resident Evil....Very good games (I have RE4 for the GC and it rules) but I've never been scared except from the double chainsaw dudes.

The point of Eternal Darkness was cool cuz you would go insane and when that would happen the game would trick you into thinking someone was turning ur volume all the way up, or try to change the channel on ur tv, it was really cool.

Call of CThulu (not sure of name) Where you are investigating strange village and ancient monsters come out and you char starts to panic and vision starts to blur and your hands shake and revovler aiming becomes hard. And your char can get scared of his mind and you lose control...

I have not played it but I really wan't to try it out... its not so old game (perhaps 1-2 years ago) but haven't found it on stores yet... but it is quite promising.

Oooh, there's this one survival game where you get more and more scared and the screen blurs, and you're movements are sloppier and it gets to the point where it's just a smear and all you can hear is the heart beating and your breathing then your dead.

If you've read anything about Cthulhu by H.P Lovecraft it's more comical and humurous than frightening. Especially when its portrayed in a video game, it's just one of those REALLY old things that, when they were new, were terrifying, but now they're just funny. *Thinks of something really racist to say but doesn't say it, laughs to himself*

Pokemon Red was damn scary, you never know when you were going to get attacked by a Ratata in the middle of the grass!!!

I'm trying exmortis but I got stuck after going into Gwen's bedroom and passing out. Can't figure out where to go next. Very frustrating. So far the game has definitely been the scariest flash game I've ever played, though that may be because I haven't played on flash game that has ever scared me in the least since this. The only thing that has frightened me so far was that ghost in the dark hallway that appears after you get the key from the sink. It startled me a bit but wasn't that bad but I want to see more scary stuff but since I'm stuck...

As for the normal game that scared me the most well hmm. F.E.A.R. is probably the scariest all around game I've ever played but the most freaked out I've ever been was playing Thief 2. I had been following the blood trail left by this druid chick through her people's home in the forest. I had managed to get deep deep into there base near the end of the blood trail when I ended up in a grove. I snuck around looking for enemies but couldn't find anyone. This was getting my heart going because I knew someon had to be around somewhere and since Thief is a stealth game I want to see them long before they see me. Scratch that, I want to see them and I don't want them to ever see me.

I looked around for quite a while keeping to the shadows and then I thought I saw a tree move. I froze and watch the tree for a bit and saw that it swayed a little. I relaxed and figured it was just a swaying tree and then decided that maybe this area was deserted after all and figured I could follow the blood trail with no need to sneak any more. I stopped sneaking and started following the blood but before I got very far I noticed a whole bunch of trees that I thought were just simple trees were now coming after me. It was late at night and I had the lights off since Thief is a very dark game and hard to see with the lights on. It is also extremely imersive. Seeing previously inanimate trees come to live and attack me scared me half to death. After my character died and after I caught my breath and the initial shock went away it wasn't so bad but no game or any other media had ever scared me so bad as this one incident.

No other part of the game is really frightening though. It might be a bit tense and there is a bit of suspension waiting in the shadows as a guard walks by hoping he doesn't bump into you but not scary. Now that I think about Thief 2 I rember a part of Thief 3 that was scary, more on par with Exmortis. You had to go into and sneak around a haunted insane assylum. That was pritty frightening but it wasn't that intense of fear.

As for other games that I found frightening. Allien vs Predator while playing as a marine scared me. Having something show up on your motion detector and then having alliens attack you from the darkness is freaky, especially on director's cut difficulty where you can die very easily.

The first time I played Ravenholm on HL2 was scary. Especially the really fast zombies. I really didn't like the really fast ones.

I never found Resident Evil games to be all that scary. Maybe the first time you played one you'd get scared but the fear caused by that game wares of quickly.

@Millions: I don't find the SH games that frightening, they don't have the "personal being-feeling" that F.E.A.R got. In F.E.A.R, you never get to see the face of the protagonist, nor do you get to know his name, so you kind of get a feel of "being" the character - also, in a first person point of view... seeing Alma run around and crap... veeeeeeeery unsettling.

F.E.A.R have NOTHING on F.E.A.R: Extraction Point though... that expansion is hella nuts. Insanity in playable form...

Exmortis was really freaky at first, but it's very short too and now i can replay it over and over again without being actually surprised. Imho, it was too short.

eh... is i just me or am i the only one that thought fear wasn't scary? it was "creepy" and "disturbing" when u say, went through a hallucination... but not the kind of scare you get from silent hill or anything. it was a GREAT game though... the ai was superb... but i really wasn' scared by it some how. I was more scared by ravenholm in hl2 :D.

My vote goes to the Cradle Level in Thief 3 (aka Dark Project 3). "Scaryness" isn´t gore or something cheap like that it is about tension. The cradle is "just another undead level" you expect Zombies to pop up... around each corner, especially thanks to the GREAT background music. Once the Zombies DO turn up they are unsettling as they "disturb" the light in their area (you have to experience it to know what I mean) and unlike any other undead in the Game their Corpses don´t vanish once they are defeated, you always expect them to stand up again (wich they do!).
My description doesn´t even come close to it, I really recomend you to get that game, that level alone is worth it.

Hahha. Have you tried to pause the film to that exact moment? He sure looks wicked and I think it was totally appropriate because of the ring's great influence over him. And we really never see the car, just a cloud of dust. Could be a wagon. Or are we even talking about the same scene?

Anyway Aliens vs. Predator 2 has pretty creepy atmosphere. With the marine it's like pitch black and suddenly three super-fast aliens attack you from nowhere and you're dead in two seconds. Just played the demo and gonna order it today.

Okay man, it's called suspension of disbelief. If that thing REALLY came after you, in an abandoned house, I really truly doubt u'd just be laughing and kicking it in the face. First of all, the ghost was obviously NOT affected by anything physical. This is where my mind takes to some very dark places, it's that ghosts are beyond reason, and they're method of killing surpasses anything we can bust out logically. There's no locking doors, there's no guns, no whatever. That's what scares me, this feeling of a tortured after life that's so painful and omnipotent at the same time.

Kick the damn thing. I wish I could, but I truly doubt anybody in their right minds would be able to perceive it as a sluggish or retarded animal. It's not crippled, it's demented by hate and pain. It's manifestation of an emotional spirit. You just don't have anything against it.

It was a game released for PS2, not sure about any other systems. It was kind of like the Aliens series of movies if you ever saw them, a bunch of people are trying to rescue a ship from an army of monsters that infested it. It had a pretty cool twist though, as the game goes on you can slowly watch the ship get more infested and turn into a whole other entity while you are trying to save everyone.

Yeah, the one thing you should never do when watching foreign movies is watching the Hollywood version. They don't get much right. Stick with the originals and the subs.

I think FEAR or Doom 3 is the scariest as well. The little girl f*cking scares the sh*t out of me. I just can't get enough of getting scared though. I was playing it at night with some of my friends over, and this complete ass decided to scare me right while I was playing. I screamed like a baby.

can someone help me? I'm sort of stuck on this game. So far I've explored every room in the house except that one room that won't open because someone is holding it from the other side (or so it says). I've basically have read thru all the literature made available to me (the diary, the book by that one dude and the ExMortis found in the safe). I've viewed the strange symbols found on the painting in the hallway and the ones found on the old grandfathers clock. I don't see how that corresponds to the row of books found on the left side of the bookcase in the library. Some help appreciated. In the meantime I'll try to look around for more clues. Thanks.

Bio-Shock is not really scary from what I heard and seen, the Big-Daddys (Big and mechanical) are mostly guardians for the little un-dead Girl

i really hate playing resident evil 3 or silent hill on my pitch black room, absolutely no light comes inside the room..... so....... scary.......

i have a tendency to scream when nemesis pops out from a window or something.............
and i dont know why, but the final stage of Half Life (the alien place) was giving me goose bumps.... dont know why...............

i remember playing this game a LONG time ago and i wasnt that scared (it was at night ) but it had me creeped out i think i quit playing because i got stuck and then got borred and played some more crap

Its just as scary with all those scary popups of scary images. I actually havent played the original exmortis. In one of the scenes u have to find the keys to the car while the red clouds was coming at you and i didnt no what to do. I was like holy! I eventually found the keys. its soo intense and it feels like there is something around the corner everytime. Im sorry if somebody else brought this up. I just didnt want to go through all those comments.

Meh. If you dare to play Resident, you dare to play Exmortis. That's an universal rule.
Resident Evil can get a lot scarier sometimes. There is not much action (but some) in Exmortis. It is about the atmosphere...

I suggest you try it out, just once :good:

I just followed along with the discussion today and decided to try out Exmortis over at Newgrounds.com. It is quite an odd game but well designed IMO. The storyline (especially the journal entries) really add depth to everything.

I am nowhere near completing this but I found it funny that I could not use the small, bloodied knife found in the kitchen.
