Did you ever find a workaround? I've tried everything and I've decided not to play anymore until Blizzard fixes it. I'm just sick of getting yelled at by other players for them seeing the waiting screen five times a game.

    i upgraded my video card from a 1GB 250GTS to a 1GB 460GTX
    i still get pausing
performance is better all around but not within my expectations
a minimum frame increase of 5-10fps, maximum frame i dunno since i run v-sync and cap at 60fps for obvious heat reasons

ok guys i think i fixed it
when i did a fresh install of windows 7 the first time i wasn't aware or knew what AHCI mode was
anyways i wanted to utilize Intel's new rapid storage matrix drivers only available on motherboards that have the Intel ICH0R controller (X58 chipset), however you must be running a RAID setup or enable AHCI in your bios prior to installing windows
but i did not want to format and re-install windows just to get this working and i am not running a RAID setup to begin with (2 non-identical hard drives)
so upon reading this guide i got it to work
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/61869-ahci-enable-windows-7-vista.html
u must have supporting hardware or the affects could be disastrous (motherboard and hard drive)
just follow the registry mod, reboot into your bios and change from IDE to AHCI
if all goes well u should be able to boot into windows
windows will install your new drivers
    restart again
now download Intel's rapid storage matrix drivers and install those
restart once again and it's all done
upon successful completion i got UMDA6 working as before the best i could get is UDMA5
some benchmarking before and after proved it is faster
another WARNING, even though i did NOT change my hardware windows 7 thinks i did and i had re-activate my windows and through the internet did not work so i had to do it through the telephone which worked and pretty painless

Yeah, Microsoft is pretty understanding when you call them up for phone activation. Glad you got something working. Most people simply need to install their SATA IDE drivers, and it will switch to AHCI mode automatically. I'll check my buddies machine to see if he indeed has AHCI enabled. I'm not sure it matters on his machine because he's using a RAID controller anyway (so that driver had to be installed to boot).

it was an automated activation response, i talked to no one
    just follow the instructions
i believe u have to force AHCI to install those intel rapid storage drivers
those IDE drivers are just plain garbage after this
legacy support but i'm not running any legacy hardware

I read that article more carefully (although I'm sure I've browsed it before trying to figure out that ATI SATA driver issue), this wouldn't work on my buddies machine since he has an nForce chipset.

Can you post a new DXDiag now that you have done this? I want to see how the changes show up in the storage section. Name it something like "new-dxdiag" or something.

Yeah, the drives aren't listed at "ATA" devices anymore... just listed normally.

Someone else dropped into the forum and had the same problem with a similar X58 based setup. I'm going to mod the topic a bit with more details and stick this thread for awhile.

i've been playing starcraft 2 quite extensively and can confirm i don't get the sudden "pause of death" anymore
overall my computer is faster from boot times to an all around better windows experience
windows experience index still rates my drive(s) as 5.9 (same as previously)

Yeah, ignore that rating.. it means jack crap unless it tells you something is wrong. I'm recommending someone else give this fix a shot with his X58 in the forum right now. Hopefully he will take your discovery and fix his pause of death.
